Hi everybody,
I'm in my 60's and I've been suffering stiffening neck and back problems on and off for quite some time, but recently the recurrences have become more frequent.
I have quite a lot to deal with at the moment with both parents in a nursing home, father with full faculties shouting and complaining and mother with dementia either screaming or doped out. On top of this I have a warring brother who holds my mother responsible for him being destitute, and is taking it out on me as her Power of Attorney.
I've been reading the books, and although I felt some healing initially, it hasn't lasted. My husband had to coerce me to join this forum, but I respectfully can't see how it can help me.
Right now, I am in considerable pain and having to lie down to get some relief.

If the cause of your pain is TMS, which as a tennis player I'm not qualified or licensed to DX (but you landed at a TMS site--"don't ask a barber if you need a haircut", so let's assume for the case of argument that the cause of your pain is TMS.
According to the Good Doctor's theory, the pain is a PROTECTOR, a psychological defense mechanism, that the sub-conscious creates to avoid the perceived greater emotional pains.
Knowing that your pain is physically harmless, due to a minute oxygen deprivation to a few muscle cells will help you to overcome your fear that you are doing permanent damage by moving.
But, you will still have to deal with the life stress issues (see the Rahe-Holmes list) but you already know what they are--relatives--"why can they push your buttons?--because they installed them."
So, the TMS gremlin is doing exactly what the sub-c mind was created t do, to PROTECT you from "perceived" danger--it's taken you off life's battlefield and onto the couch for a respite from the war.
Understanding TMS theory will help greatly to overcome the fear of doing structural damage, but dealing with the emotional issues causing the tension will alliviate the pain in the long run. |

Thank you for the advice tennis tom.
At the moment I am reading the power of your subconscious mind by Dr Joseph Murphy and using the strategies recommended, I am having amazing success. after tolerating so much pain for more than 10 years I have seen great improvement overnight!!!
The advice is so simple yet I needed to reach rock bottom before I understood what I was doing to my own self by feeding my subconscious brain all the wrong messages. I honestly did not realise that by thinking and talking about all the pain and how difficult it was to engage in everyday activities I was sabotaging my own self.
I now understand better how TMS perpetuates. Thank you Dr Sarno and thank you Dr Murphy.
