Funny, this TMS "on the run", it really is true. Sunday I was at band practice, with guys who I don't know well, and out of nowhere, all this stomach cramping came on. I was doubled over. Just came on like a possessed demon. I was in the bathroom at band practice just about five feet from where we practice and several times I had diarreah. I kept talking myself through it, saying it is TMS, it's nothing more than that. I stunk out the rehearsal space so bad my drummer had to open the cellar window wide open. I had to leave practice because I was so nauseous. I am not a person with stomach issues, never have been. Never have reflux, heartburn, nothing. So for this to come on was a sure bet that it was TMS Fu*)^ing around with me. I also notice now that my back is feeling better I have acid indigestion now on and off but it comes and goes. My attack of "the runs" at band practice would have brought tears to an angel's eyes. Luckily I got through it and it passed. Oh, did it pass, right down the toilet about five times that afternoon.
I have to laugh at it because it was comical. I even started all the making fun of myself in front of the guys in the band, I started joking about how gross I am, etc. Becuase if I acted all embarrassed and shy, I think it would have been like giving in to the TMS. I laughed AT IT and it allowed me to get through an otherwise stinky and embarrassing day.

Oh, speaking of the band rehearsal, here's the email reply from the drummer who owns the house:

Hey all,
Sorry for the diarreah debacle. Hope you didn't get too sick to your stomachs from the horribly putrid stench. Hey, we're all family now! Tee hee hee.

Good story. I always wondered whether Kurt Cobain's chronic stomach pains were TMS - even if the more "traditional" kind (i.e. the now-unpopular ulcer type). By some accounts it was so extreme that it lead him to heroin, and from there to death.

So, if you get signed up and made into a superstar against your will - just remember - think psychological, it's only TMS.

Absolutely, I think Cobain's was, probably derived from all the repressed anger and rage his lovely bride put him through.
Anyone would go off the deep end with that kind of dysfunction. I guess he dealt as best he could with heroin as the pain killer of the stomach stuff. Poor guy. I think he was classic TMS.

I think you handled that situation great! It was potentially embarassing, particularly with people you don't know well, yet you made light of it and carried on as best you could, not letting the symptoms get to you. The drummer's response clearly shows that no offense was taken, he has a sense of humor, and this will be one of those "war stories" you'll have a few laughs about sometime over a beer after a gig.
