For anyone who has had trouble with a boss at work - and I've noticed that quite a few of us have found the attitude of an unreasonable boss or manager a factor in TMS - this is an interesting article on the personality that has the qualities to make a successful boss.
The David Brent mentioned in the article is the boss in the British comedy series, 'The Office' (If you get the chance to see it, give it a go - it's very good. An American version is in the pipeline, but hasn't been broadcast yet).

Sorry - this link doesn't seem to work. If you are interested to read the article go to -

Type Oliver James in the search bar and it's the first article that comes up -
"is your boss a psychopath?"

Fascinating article, Anne!
It describes my boss perfectly:
"...superficial charm, insincerity, egocentricity and manipulativeness....a higher incidence of narcissism: grandiosity, self-focused lack of empathy for others, exploitativeness and independence."
He also lost his mother when he was young, like many of the bosses and leaders referred to in the study.
Interesting, yet sad at the same time. I never thought of him as having a personality disorder. It all fits together now.
I've also found that bosses aren't capable of actually DOING anything, beyond chatting and calling unnecessary meetings. They can't seem to focus on anything very long or apply themselves to anything beyond their own ambition. They're quite deranged when you think about it. They're neither creative or productive. At the end of the day, they've contributed virtually nothing worthwhile.
As I like to say:
Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't do OR teach, manage. |

Having a lousy boss is a nightmare, plain and simple. I've only had one, thankfully, and that was enough. This guy was an incompetent, spoiled brat with no social skills and no sense of humor whatsoever. His only skill was kissing up to the brass, which he was a master at. I had fantasies about kicking his ass on a daily basis. I thank God everyday that I now have a very, very cool boss.

You guyses have all heard my rants about my boss...
I have a mixed TMS bag of emotions about him.
He is a liar:to clients regarding time, schedule and his abilities, :to himself about his abilities and his superiority to others. :to his employees.....saying one thing as an absolute , then immediately contradicitng himself.
He is a pompous fool,is cruel..if he has a bad night gambling,we're in trouble in the morning....if a client compliments us,he degrades us right afterward lest we feel good about our work.
He has NO friends and NO hobbies.....sometimes we will discuss art, music,or macabre deep dark humour at work and he has nothing to add to the conversation....than he tries to break in with a sports quip(the only conversational topic we remotely have in common)
I feel sorry for him in the most profound sort of way.He has admitted that even his wife and he,though childless, have zero sex life...He lives to work.
So...I want to hate him and demonize him,but at the same time, the part of me that can see through the illusion of division wants to help him,try to be a friend.
He is a walking TMS factory for others.
I have learned to dodge as much work as possible.....3 or 4 days a week of him is plenty.
When he leaves us alone on the job ,he has eviscerated our confidence to the point where all initiative has been removed from his crew....if you do something without his direct micromanagement, you either did it too well, out of order,or spent to much time on it...so after we complete his directives we NEVER stay at work longer, lest we be lectured for our wasteful time.
....conflict,rage,guilt,anxiety,fear,compassion......
Psychopath? more like social miscreant.
I pray for him all the time.
peace

Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't do OR teach, manage.
Would you like to clarify that one ?

mala, I think it's meant to be a joke.
I've never found it funny. Teaching is one of the most difficult (and important) jobs in the world. |

Those who can't do, teach.
Sorry, folks. Didn't mean to slam the teaching profession. My wife's a teacher and it's a big part of my job.
It was a lead-up to,
Those who can't do OR teach, manage.
This is a blatant swipe at office managers. No apologies. Most of them - in my experience - are worthless parasites. Paid the most and contribute the least. |
