Hello all,

This my first time posting although I have been coming here for years. I found my relief from sciatica here in 2007....sure enough other maladies arose and I dealt with them the same way. I am classic TMS personality.

I am off on vacation Saturday - 5 hour flight - and it has reared its ugly head BIG TIME.

It started with back spasm on right side (original site) then after a day moved to left (classic)

I have been worrying about going away - dogs ok, new dental work ok, fear of flying. The thought of sitting 5 hours when I can not sit for a minute is terrifying. I am repudiating structure but can not seem to tell my mind to release thi spain.

Come on my TMS mentors - talk me down and out of my self induced pain.

Thank you so much for everything over the years.

It is an isidious #$@!@

To help you get through this acute and time-limited "emergency" situation, and to keep the panic down to a dull roar, I'd just suggest taking meds. You can't CONTROL your pain and having to sit on a plane for 5 hours ... just knowing I had meds in my pocket would help, whether or not I chose to use them.

This is TMS in a nutshell. It has succeeded at generating fear of the pain. Even though you believe you have repudiated the structural diagnosis, your thoughts say otherwise.

You can not control the pain. In fact, any attempt to control it is counterproductive because it has you focused on it. The only path you can take in an acute episode is acceptance. You need to belittle the pain, and accept it as nothing more than a nuisance. Try to consider it a benign sensation.

You cannot "tell your mind" to release the pain, but you can "tell your mind" that you know what it is doing and you are not falling for its tricks. You can "laugh at your mind" for its feeble attempt to make you believe that you have a structural issue. Then you can ignore the pain and instead focus on all those worries and where they are coming from.

I believe there is no harm in taking some medication such as ibuprofen, or something stronger if you really need it, as long as you keep in mind that you are simply treating the symptom even though you are certain that the pain is benign and does not indicate a structural issue.

Dave, your answer is really amazing.

Katie, in addition to what Dave has said, you are conditioned to worry about such things and you should try to change your thought process. You should be like - is thinking this way really worth this suffering. You must not avoid like situations, but go into them accepting the suffering and try to relax your nerves through it until your mind eventually becomes comfortable with the situation. If you only periodically encounter these situations, you will not be as successful at reconditioning yourself.
