Hi,
I have read all three of Sarno's books, and I'm wondering, because this has never happened to me (and I don't want it to either!). What is causing the popping sound that Sarno says some people say they hear, when they are describing the moment their back "went out"? In all the years I've been suffering I've never heard that. I'm just curious what it is physiologically that is making the pop noise? And does it occur because the brain sends a message to the back to cause the pop so one thinks "oh, no, my back just went out" and it's a distraction noise or is it a real physical thing that happens on its own as a result of the way the person bent, etc. I get confused because I know we are supposed to think psychologically, not physically, but that's quite a physical phenomenon that people describe.
Thanks

Mary,

Maybe it's "the weasel." Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I'm not sure what it is but when my back has "gone out" I have noticed the "pop" noise as well. It's probably just cartilage or something, who knows.

I think anything is possible with TMS. Why do I get dizzy when I just think about being dizzy? The TMS gremlin is very crafty - I suppose it could make a pop noise to go with back pain. I've gone through periods when I've heard popping noises in my neck a lot too. Lately I haven't fixated on it so it hasn't been a problem.

Hope you get some answers!

Laura

Hi Maryalma8,

I've heard my back crack before.

I believe the noise is caused by small nitrogen pockets between the joints, just like when someone cracks their knuckles. It makes a sound. Its benign and will not hurt you. Its just a noise and doesn't mean you back is out, or in, for that matter.

Take care, -Stryder

I have a quite loud pop and sensation of something popping back into place every so often when I stand up from sitting. It is completely painless (but quite disconcerting) and has never coincided with any of the times my back has been painful.

My body is particularly poppy and cracky (other people comment on it so it's not just me thinking I'm louder than average). Most of the cracks are painless but sometimes I get pain in an area that is noisy.

Don't know what to make of it really but I've decided not to try and keep anaylzing what is going on physically because I've had so many personal demonstrations that it's a combination of my mind and body (ie not just structural).

Pops and cracks are just gas escaping between the joints. It is perfectly natural. My body cracks all the time.

I have a friend who plays the drums. After he finishes a session playing, he systematically goes round virtually every joint and clicks and pops to his heart's content. It is particularly disgusting to witness but of course he feels no pains and is not worried about it in the slightest!
