Closest i can come to a similar experience is tinnitus. Never diagnosed but since the house is full of buzzing appliances, etc. I figured that was the cause of my ringing ears.. I'm not prepared to go off the grid (much as I yearn for peace and quiet) so I "forgot" my tinnitus. No problem since.
Best of luck with your "thin sound" but I must admit it sounds like TMS to me.
