Hello Friends, I am at work and hoping for some support/advise from my fellow TMS'ers. I bent over to lift out a bag of garbage from the kitchen container and it was heavier than I expected it to be. I thought in my mind.."Oh no, my neck, the herniated discs, etc. etc. ad nauseum." Then I forgot about it til the next day when the pain was in certain fingers and down the upper arm. Did I create this whole manifestation or did I cause some inflammation on the nerve by lifting something with my head down that was too heavy for me? I took advil, did ice and it seemed not too bad. Then after doing laundry, food shopping (lifting bags), etc. it became progressively worse. I am at work now and suffering badly. I am looking to move for the 7th time in the past 3 yrs since the tragic death of my brother
I am not making enough money in my day job and singing once per month. Thank God a painting sold recently or I'd be in real trouble.SO there is much life stress. I need to move to an area w/ a better music/art scene and there are offers in several places like Michigan, for example. I am over-stimulated trying to decide and dread moving again..but I must..Hoping to have some feedback regarding this..My neck hasn't acted up like this in years. The pain in the arms/fingers is scary. I have been helped tremendously in the past by applying DR. Sarno's principles and from this forum..
I am also dealing w/ a lot of loneliness and isolation where i am living. Most of my friends are out of state. Theres quite a bit of drama in my NJ family on top of this...long, dull story there..but causing a significant amount of sadness and stress for me..
Has anyone else ever experienced the onset of a lot of pain after having that thought "Oh no, I might have hurt myself doing that?"
Thanks, Karen |

Hi Karen - so sorry you are in pain. It kind of lines up with your stress at this time. I had one of those scary moments a while ago - I was jumping up and down on our garbage after Christmas to fit everything in one can. I forgot our can had wheels, and I went flying down the front steps and landed on the concrete. It must have looked really funny, but I thought for sure I broke my right leg. Fortunately, it was just strained. Maybe you just had a strain too, but scared yourself. |

Thanks Altherunner..Wow..that sounds painful too..The pain is persisting..Just as i thought it would be better i was skyping w/ a dear friend in Israel this morning for hours and the neck is not happy...I am trying to tell myself that the discussion we had, the content, is what tightened things up again..this is maddening..I have big decisions to make and considerable pressure on all fronts..I have not had neck stuff in years...:( |

OMG Jaya, I just looked at ur post...I hope your wife is alright! Prayers coming ur way! Appreciate the comment about it not existing..The garbage bag I lifted was much heavier than what I would normally lift..But I am still hoping/praying this is TMS rather than a real injury.. |

S/A: If you really hurt yourself the pain would be immediate. Stop obsessing about your pain, your herniated discs, your aching arms and fingers, etc. and concentrate on solving those problems that are causing psychological stress. Where can we see some of your paintings? |

It sounds like classic TMS. So many times TMS will take advantage of an "accidental" injury and eventually go chronic. The experiences you describe all sound like events that would indicate emotions that are wanting to come out and TMS is busy at work doing it's distraction thing.Hang in there ! I have had dozens of symptoms over the years. I thank God I didn't have health insurance and an opportunity to run to the doctor every time. I had to just ride it out, reread the Sarno material and eventually each incident dissipated. |

Hi Karen - is there a place you would like to move that has opportunities for you? Any where that you have some friends too? I stayed in a job I did not like for 5 years because I didn't want to move. Fortunately, I am starting a much better job next week. With your talents and abilities, and willingness to move, the sky is the limit for you! I also viewed your paintings, very nice! |

Hi Karen.
You really should know the answer by now. Maybe you do, but you need to hear it from somebody else.
Of course, this is textbook. The goal of TMS is to make you believe you have a real physical problem. When you make it so easy the unconscious mind cannot resist and seizes the opportunity to perpetuate the symptoms.
By now, instead of having that thought, you should have the opposite thought. If you feel pain after doing some kind of activity you laugh it off, reiterate to yourself that your body is strong and you did not cause any damage, and any soreness you may feel due to over-exertion is normal and temporary. Then you should go about your day ignoring the pain and trying to think of things going on in your life that are troubling you deep down.
Instead, you played right into the hand of TMS, focusing on the pain, treating it physically (with ice) and thinking about structural diagnoses. In other words, the old habit came back to bite you.
It is normal to have some relapses, but it is important to get back into the proper mindset quickly and move on. It seems there are a lot of stressors in your life right now so it is no surprise that a TMS attack would come in some form or another. Recognize it for what it is, ignore the pain, and continue to focus on the emotional realm. |
