So I've just started a new exercise routine that involves a lot of intense jumping and squatting. I also started back doing a lot more cardio and running.

Well, basically I have developed this sharp pain on the outside of my knee. It doesn't hurt all the time, mainly when going up and down stairs. I can do most stuff with little pain, but running has starting irritating it and going down stairs is pretty excruciating.

I don't recall injuring it, it just kind of came up gradually. Anyways, what would be your advice? Is this most likely TMS or maybe some kind of real injury?

Really don't think anyone would swear it was either an injury or TMS if you've suddenly started intensive workouts!

Could be either. But are you happy with your workouts or pushing yourself to do them for some reason.... trying to prove something perhaps?

If that is the case it could be TMS. But you will prob have to take it easy for a while if it becomes worse to rule out injury.

I experienced knee pain from starting to sit deep during table tennis practice. I couldn't climb the stairs for two days after. I kept training though and every week the after-symptoms were less than the week before. Nowadays I rarely have knee pain after practice.
Give it time, don't overdo it but also don't let it stop you.
take care
