Looking for book suggestions for chronic worrying. Specifically health anxiety/hypochondria and/or obsessive thinking. Any thoughts? |

In my opinion, the best book on dealing with chronic worry is: "How to stop worrying and start living" by Dale Carnegie. The terms TMS/anxiety didn't even exist when he wrote that book, but in it you will see countless of example of people suffering from tms/anxiety. He taught people how to over come it.
Worry is just our mind's thinking is irrational. Dale Carnegie will teach us how to think rational.

Trying to stop worrying without getting to the core beliefs is futile. Troubling thoughts come from conclusions we make about the world and ourselves.
Beliefs are thought generators and as long as the self-defeating belief is not addressed it will generate negative thoughts.
Second the more tense the body is and the more anxious you are the more the cortex is shut down and the limbic system is in control – it is designed for our preservation to look for anything frightening, potentially threatening or problematic.
When your core beliefs have been changed to self benefitting and your body is supple worries will stop. 99% of all worry is: “I am not up to what ever life brings to me.” If you had the internal beliefs that you were strong enough and had the appropriate skills you would not worry about illness, finances or anything else. |

I'm with NextAdventure on this one! Core beliefs must change because they are the root cause of tms equivalents like chronic worrying. We were way too young to decide that stuff and it needs updating.
For me, I like Internal Family Systems and would recommend Jay Earley's Self-Therapy which gives a good foundation in the process. Best, perhaps, to have a few intro sessions with a practitioner but doable, for many people, on their own.
I am also exploring Karl Dawson's Matrix Reimprinting right now (a form of EFT). Both books are available at Amazon, on Kindle and in paperback.
Personally, I think the Matrix Reimprinting theory is weird but the method seems to work so what the heck! I hardly ever agree with anyone's theory, to tell the truth. Imo, we mostly just make stuff up to explain the unexplainable.

So I guess I need to explore this idea. I definitely do not believe I'm "strong enough" to handle life and the various troubles that come with it. In fact, I said this out loud yesterday.
Also, I appreciate this:

This explains a lot. How did I not know this?
I also like how njoy refers to worrying as a tms equivalent. Why have I not thought of this? Njoy, by "we were way too young to decide that stuff and it needs updating" what do you mean?

The Worry Cure: Seven Steps to Stop Worry from Stopping You by Robert L. Leahy
He runs the cognitive therapy center in NYC.
Also "Stop Worrying About Your Health" by George Zgourides
"It's Not All In Your Head" by Gordon Asmundson
The last author also wrote a book called "Treating Health Anxiety" which is more for the therapist but I bought it anyway. All of these are cognitive based but "It's Not All In Your Head" describes how the symptoms are real…also along the lines of TMS.
You can get all of these used on Amazon as you probably know or do already, so much cheaper than new. If you pick one, pick the one by Zgourides, on the cover it says "How To Quit Obsessing and Feel Better Now".
Hope this helps. On my bad days, I reread them.

The first thing that comes to mind is to forget reading books and live life. Live lie hard. Live life without introspection. Live life at full speed. Live life without fear. Hillbilly said "fear is your jailor". You only have the keys to your cell. Unlock fear. Stay in today.
If you must read, read the books of Abraham Low MD. Read them; the re-read them. Then read them again. Then meditate on his ideas. The only way to quit worrying is to quit worrying. Change your thoughts. It's in your control. Health anxiety is anxiety. Once you learn the methods to deal with anxiety your HA will disappear too.
Time to put down the books. You know all you have to know. Imagine if you had stayed at that other site?
