First, let me say I'm a big believer in Sarno, having "cured" myself of back pain several years ago. I have also just had the worst and most stressful/anxiety-ridden year of my life which definitely points to TMS.

Had a hysterectomy 6 weeks ago. Around week 3, my left calf started aching. I figured it was from laying around the house all day. I also started obsessing about it being DVT (blood clot). The aching got progressively worse, and started traveling up my leg (so now my entire leg is aching). I wound up in the ER this past weekend, they did an ultrasound and ruled out a blood clot. Went to see my doctor, who ruled out it being related to the surgery. She suggested that I see a physical therapist...well, I've been down THAT road before! (TMS!)

So here are all the factors leading me to believe this is TMS:

1) no doctor I've seen so far is able to explain the aching
2) my worrying and stress level is at an all time high
3) I've been completely obsessed with my leg for weeks now
4) oxygen deprivation would surely cause this kind of aching (I have no swelling, no redness, no visable symptoms)
5) pain relievers are not helping
6) the aching which started in my calf only, has now traveled to my thigh as well (pain moving around)
7) the surgery was the perfect "excuse" for TMS to show up, so that I would believe it was medically related
8) I am being referred to a physical therapist!

Would you agree this is TMS?

Hi Busted,

I’m really impressed at your analysis. It shows deep critical thinking and a desire to understand all the facts. You have also shown diligence by getting the ultrasound and seeing your doctor. I also have a need to be obsessive and accurate, sometimes to my detriment!

If you don’t mind I would like to add some observations:
If you are lying around this is a perfect time for TMS. For one thing your body is not active nor is your brain. This is a perfect time for brooding and self obsessing.

The fact that you have been told to seek physical therapy could be seen as a good thing as they are giving you the OK for physical activity.

From what I know and believe everything points to TMS with the exception of # 8 being referred to physical therapy, as they may be taking the approach that you have atrophy of some sort. I don’t believe that all physical therapy is bad, and you could consider it a form of exercise. I am sorry I really don’t know on this issue, and can only say I that I had a terrible time with all sorts of pains with an idle broken foot. Could you accept this is only atrophy or not, since you have dutifully ruled out your blood clot fears? Can someone else discuss this please?

My wife has had a hysterectomy, it takes time to heal. I wish you well and happier times, I hope this helps a little.

You imply that your recent operation could be an "enabling factor" for the TMS. Does this mean that it is not the cause of your stress? If so, you need to add another item to your list.

Andy, thanks for your input. I think my doctor only gave me the name of the physical therapist because she didn't know what else to tell me. She even said that I probably want to wait it out before seeing him, so I don't think she thinks it's atrophy or anything urgent. I've been through physical therapy several times for other TMS issues (back, hip, leg etc..), and surprise, surprise, it didn't help me one bit. So I'm not a fan of PT, that would be my last resort.

Peregrinus - my health is definitely at the top of my stress factors, but not the only stressful thing going on in my life.

Hi Busted,

When I was under an HMO the same thing happened to me, the doctor had said my neck spasm was caused “involuntarily”, and had no further information to offer other than P.T. I went one time! I was looking for an answer for my crooked neck, I got it – "involuntarily" = TMS.

Re-read Mindbody Prescription and am feeling better! It even tried to jump to my other leg. I'm getting there!

It really sounds like TMS to me. One of the things I have noticed is that when I have TMS episodes, they often end mysteriously after a visit to the doctor. I would probably have pretty much the same reaction as you if I had some kind of surgery because of dwelling too much on my health issues. You really sound a lot like me.

Thanks chickenbone! I am trying my best not to worry and just treat it as TMS!
