Reading this morning on the finer points of my new hard work, and, admittedly distracted, scanning the room for stray conversations. I find three:
1. "I think my pain is a defense mechanism. It's stress. I know it's stress."
2. "I had anxiety in my stomach for three months. Then it became agoraphobia."
3. "It's all stress man. All stress."
The topic du jour, every day, is the mind-body connection: it is at the top of the parlance of those with time to sit and talk next to chai lattes. It's more and more frequent, sometimes cluttered by paleo diet talk and food allergies (or "juicing" as I type).
It's talked about as if it's popular and well-fed creed. But to most it's skin deep and gone after the conversation espousing it ends.
People talk. They don't do.
The oldest trick in the book.

Yes. It is also the lament of those who want to believe, who feel small or crushed or unloved. They parley with hope and horror and call a truce by clinging to a rock called sameness. It is frightening to let all this go and trust in...what? True healing, true love, true friendship feels like the dream's dream. Much easier to reject ourselves before they do, sup down our coffee like a good-un and repeatedly buy in. But a conversation is a start and a good book recommendation a step towards the better place and a smile the kindest act of all. |
