I recently started having severe intrusive thoughts. For those who dont know what that is, heres the definition: " ump to: navigation, search
Intrusive thoughts are unwelcome involuntary thoughts, images, or unpleasant ideas that may become obsessions, are upsetting or distressing, and can be difficult to manage or eliminate.[1] When they are associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and sometimes attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the thoughts may become paralyzing, anxiety-provoking, or persistent. Intrusive thoughts may also be associated with episodic memory, unwanted worries or memories from OCD,[2] posttraumatic stress disorder, other anxiety disorders, eating disorders, or psychosis.[3] Intrusive thoughts, urges, and images are of inappropriate things at inappropriate times, and they can be divided into three categories: "inappropriate aggressive thoughts, inappropriate sexual thoughts, or blasphemous religious thoughts".[4]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrusive_thoughts is a more in depth description.
I have suffered with anxiety and physical symptoms nearly all my life. I have went through great lengths to overcome anxiety and as soon as I defeat lets say panic attacks, I would then develop a different form of anxiety. Ive been through panic attacks, health anxiety, agoraphobia, social anxiety, ocd, the list goes on and on. Its appears to be just like symptom imperative. I have had very good luck with TMS like symptoms when I followed dr schubiners course and with help from this forum. As of right now I am not having any physical TMS symptoms that are causing me any type of distress. Possibly b/c my mind is distracted with these thoughts. They are so greatly distressiNG. I havejust about become homebound all over again. As soon as I get within a mile or 2 from home. I start getting flooded with these thoughts. The thoughts feel so real and cause anxiety and physical tension. I often wonder if I will perform a thought, which scares me. Thats how I know its intrusive thoughts. Ive had them before but, never did I have them every day for a month now. Ive tried all my old anxiety tricks to rid these thoughts or at least acknowledge these thoughts and try to observe them and change my reaction to them, which is how mos people beat intrusive thoughts. So, if anyone has dealt with this symptom and had luck please let me know. I know intrusive thoughts are usually part of OCD sometime called pure O where people just have obsessions. I know sarno mentioned OCD as possibly a tms equivalent. Thanks for reading this long post.

Hi Walnut, from my own case history I know that OCD, anxiety and TMS all go hand in hand. My intrusive thoughts related to my symptoms and would then trigger an internal emotion and soon break into panic and then spiral all around. Certainly unpleasant.
What helped..
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) - give it a try, look it up on Youtube. It's seems odd and a bit weird but it really worked well to discharge that internal emotion. It works very well to take that anxiety away.
Meditation - just a 10 minutes a day is useful. Connecting the your 8 year old self.
Self Talk - affirmations, positive ones. And say them as if they have already happened. I say every day "my feels strong, I can do anything and I feel great"
Medications - Yup, sometimes you need a bit of help. Zoloft. I know that Sarno says that it will keep you reperessing your emotions but I disagree.
hope this helps. |

Walnut, have you read "The Power of Now" and/or "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle? I would recommend both of these books. They have been life-changing for me and countless others. They don't focus on the TMS aspect but rather on your mind/ego and the thoughts you may find yourself having. |

On page 350 of Steven Ray Ozanich's great TMS text, "THE GREAT PAIN DECEPTION", he writes:
OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)--An anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry, the visible symptoms can include repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing anxiety; the disorder can also produce a combination of thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions).
This is in the book's glossary Appendix A: "TMS EQUIVALENTS--SERVING THE SAME PURPOSE AS PAIN".
