Hello all. I have a referral from my doc to talk to a psychoanalyst type doctor that specialized in somatoform disorders. There are a number close to me. I do not really know how to screen one from another. Other than asking if they are familiar with John Sarno's work, are there any other questions you would ask to make sure I am getting someone that is solid to deal with this condition?

I found out that Ira was actually in network with my healthcare as well and he would be covered so I would actually think of flying to NY to meet with him and stay locally for a while.

Has anyone worked directly with Ira? Is there anyone else out there that would be equally as impressive to deal with?

I have a few folks locally that I was referred to so that could be my first option to start there and see if they are able to help but I would imagine the folks familiar with Dr Sarno's work would be few and far between.

I appreciate any and all insights into how to proceed.

This guy is about to get his broken back and brain cured.

Thanks!

When I was refered to a Tms therapist I had to have one session with an intake therapist who would fit my personality etc.

They were all Sarnos people.

Dr.R, is a good guy but doesn't explain Tms to well. Atleast not to me, but then again he knew I was Sarnos patient. He was very good at returning calls and explaining the procedure to make an appointment and his history with sarno.

**Sure I can lay down on a bed of nails and not have pain but why am I having back pain when laying down on a soft mattress?

Well my issue is that my health care provider referred me to just a regular psychoanalyst that specializes in somatoform disorders. I dont know if he or she knows Dr Sarno's work from a bucket of paint. Is it worth going to someone like that to dig out the issues and them apply the principles from the book or do you really need someone that can pull out the issues that is familiar with Dr S's work. I emailed Dr Sarno and he responded but just said he is out of the game now and referred me to his book.

I figured Ira was closest to him so he would be a good place to start. if anyone has any history with a solid doc in this space I am all ears!

Thanks everyone!

Sarno referred me to an Olga protomastro who was my intake therapist. She introduced me to my current therapist now. She is easily found on google. Most Tms therapist don't take insurance FYI

Sarno had told me with a stern look that I need a Tms specific therapist when I had told him I had a regular therapist.

I honestly think that was the best decision I made .

Everyone's tms journeys is different . Sarno said I needed therapy and I followed his orders. Some people here never used therapy and got better.

I actually like therapy because even before the Tms I had issues that needed to be addressed

Sadly I am in the metropolitan center of the UNIVERSE! NOT! Salt Lake City Utah! hehe. You would be shocked at what we do NOT have out here in the way of really anything.
