I am a classic "goodist" by Sarno's terms. I put a lot of pressure on myself to please others even by sacrificing my own happiness. What is the best way to handle this for emotional and physical health?

Should I try to be narcisist or is just acknowledging the fact that my unconscious is enraged by my behavior enough?

GTfan:
Your first problem is that you think that narcissism is the only alternative to sacrificing your self interest for others. In both cases you are seeking the approval of others. Others cannot provide you with an identity or a reason to live. When you rely on others to provide you with a sense of value you will constantly be disappointed and suffer stress.

GTfan, try not to think of the behavior as forced upon you. Try to think of it as compassionate, try to think as doing charity work, but do set a limit and learn to say no when you really don't want to.

Learn how to say: "No, but I"ll think about it." And I would change your sig, it makes you sound too much like a victim.

Hmmm, I guess I never really analyzed the quote that deeply. So you are saying that instead of acting like I am a victim of "life" causing me to hurt, I need to accept the fact that it is my own doing?

I changed it to something that reflects the fact I am falling on my behalf instead of getting "pushed" down.

You’ll fall down, you stumble, you land square on your face. And every time that happens, you get back on your feet. You get up just as fast as you can, no matter how many times you need to do it
