Hi...I am a 35 year stay at home mom that has had back issues for years. In a nutshell, about 1.5 years ago I started experiencing left buttock pain. I went to physical therapist as tennis season was about to start and I did not want to be out. I saw the PT and then decided to go to chiropractor as pain started to increase. I continued playing tennis until one night I felt like I blew out my back. I then had an MRI that showed disc herniation in L5 S1. I was told by chiropractor to see Ortho dr and so off I went. I was terrified of having surgery and just knew my tennis was over. Dr. didn't seem to think it was that bad and suggested a cortisone shot. I really did not want the cortisone shot, but at this point my entire leg was numb and my low back and buttock was in pain. I reluctantly scheduled the shot, which was for 4 days after I got back from a week long vacation. On vacation I RELAXED! Upon my return I was in the shower and twisted my low back which made it pop and poof my foot was no longer numb. I resumed playing tennis and played hard for 1.5 years. I have had a couple tweaks here and there and then it has just gone away. Fast forward to 5 weeks ago. I started experiencing buttock pain again, and felt stressed as I was playing tennis with 2 different partners (one a very agressive male, that wants to WIN:). I decided to opt out of the playoffs even though we won our division...I wanted to rest my back before Spring ALTA. I started seeing my chiropractor again and even tried acupuncture 3 times...I never felt any relief. I was dropping my son of at school and spoke to one of his teachers and she suggested I read Mind Over Back Pain...I read Healing Back Pain instead and felt immediate relief. I then went out of town and thought only about TMS and how quickly I was going to rid myself of it. I now have flat foot and left buttock pain. People keep telling me to go to the dr for the flat foot or I could lose all movement, because of a pinched nerve...but I don't want to. I know it is TMS and the dr is only going to suggest a shot. I just need to focus on the daily worry of it. It is hard though!! I guess writing all of this out is therapeutic. Anyone else have/had similar problem??
Thanks for your input! |

quote: Perhaps I was all over the place with my first post. I do believe that what I am going through is TMS, I guess I am just curious about the movement from my buttock to my calf/foot. The pain has returned to my buttock, and I can't elevate my foot(stand on my toes) without support. I really do not want to see a dr as I fee like I know what they will say... steroid injection. I have still played tennis(not too well, dragging a foot) and even gotten on the treadmill. I was sleeping fine until 2 days ago when I started to ache a little, which wakes me up. I feel like I am just worried about the foot not gaining strength back and then the worry makes everything worse.
Let's keep it one thread ok? :)
I am no specialist on this matter but it sounds to me like muscles that spasm from stress and annoy some nerves. The source is your mind, so... in my opinion TMS.
You already did some reading on the subject, so three cheers for you.
I am sure there are people here who can assure you better because they had similar symptoms. Just give it some time.
welcome by the way |

...It is hard though!!
Hi fellow tennis player, no one can positively dx you from a message board, but the percentages are GREAT that your symptoms ARE TMS! Your new symptoms are what's called "symptom substitution". You've got the TMS gremlin on the run, he's getting desperate for new distractions. See the Holmes-Rahe list in my sig below to discover what emotional stressful, TMS creating, life situations the symptoms are there to distract you from.
Keep trying to play and your symptoms will gradually go away as you warm-up and get distracted by playing. The hard part is all the people around you with well-meaning medical advice that will lead you to the knife. Forget about acupuncture, pure placebo, it's been discredited by all the real studies. I had too many acupressure sessions to count, they were only good for some relaxation. Get massages instead, they'll do your muscles and your nervous system some good. Forget the chiro-quack-ters too. See a TMS physician if one's nearby you for reassurance.
Curl up with a good TMS book, all your answers are in there, that's all you need.
G'luck, tt

Thanks Tennis Tom,
I had a bit of a breakthrough earlier today...I started Healing Back Pain over and within the first 20 pages came across Tendonalgia, which can manifest flat feet/fallen arches. I now feel comfortable moving forward knowing that this is another TMS symptom. Thank goodness. I am even going to tennis practice tonight! Wish me luck:) |

Well, I limped all over the court, but made some great shots:). I had a very deep massage yesterday and my glute is SORE, so it wasn't super easy to move. I feel like I am making progress though. I have to stop giving it so much attention and just go on with my day. The pain I can deal with and move on from, it is the limping that is driving me bonkers...especially with a 3 year old boy! Thanks for your support, I really needed it as most people think I am crazy and just need to go to the dr. I don't like dr.'s.
