i have written many times about my friend who i believe suffers from TMS her personality encompasses al the characterisitc of TMs. she is a perfectionsist, has the goodist personality and has definitely alot of anger, rage, gulit etc. in her lofe. right now she as 2 ill parents in Florida and a brother who is no help. she has ahd back pain, TMJ, frequent colds, and manymuscle pulls. 3 weeks ago she fell in school and hurt her shoulder. upon taking an MRI it showed 2 full tears. she was told to stay in a sling till she saw an orthopedist. upon looking at the MRI he said 6 weeks pf physical therapy and then we'll see. as soon as he told her no surgeryt the sling came off and she could raise her arm up. when the physcial therapist saw the MRI she said what no surgery. the first day of physical therapy my friend had no pain. she still has some weakness in her shoulde rand feels she won't get better. what i want to know is could the pain she is feeling from the fall be TMS> she has read 2 books on the subject. i gave her sarno's book MInd BOdy prescription.

It's really impossible to know the answer. Maybe she did hurt her shoulder, but maybe the injury healed in 3 weeks and now TMS has set in. This would seem likely since she has full range of motion (if she truly had a 'major tear' she would be in terrible pain). Keep in mind MRI's often magnify injuries -- what shows up as a tear might not be as bad as it looks.

I am in my last week of PT for a rotator cuff tear/frozen shoulder syndrome (adhesive capsulitis). The original tear was from an injury, then because I was so immobile from it adhesive capsulitis set in. I have read all the books on TMS and have cured by back pain along with many other symptoms and truly believe that TMS is the cause of many types of pain and/or syndrome. This shoulder injury did not respond to TMS as I believe it was not TMS but a true injury that just needed healing time. Well after 6 weeks of physical therapy I am almost totally healed and have 80% of my range of motion back. I consider this physical therapy a success and would recommend it to anybody that has a shoulder injury and/or adhesive capsulitis.
Now if the pain keeps coming back after PT is over and turns in to something chronic, then I may consider the idea of TMS but I feel great now and am very thankful for the skill of the physical therapists in getting my range of motion back. Your friend may just need some healing time and for everyone this is a ittle different, some may take longer than others. I was determined to get well so attitude is very important also.

thank you for the response. my friend does not have a frozen shoulder. the strange thing was that after 2 weeks in a sling a the doctor said no surgery for now just physcial therapy she could lift her arm over her head and sleep at night with no pain which she souldn't do for 2 weeks. sha can lift her arm out to the side and her range of motion is pretty good although the MRI says a full tear with retraction and another tear also.
