In Back in Control David Hanscom talks a lot about letting go of anger. One of his techniques is to spend time each day writing down your most unacceptable thoughts and immediately throwing them out.

Hi Barbara,

I use a technique that I learned in Emotional Brain Training, which was adapted from the "Love Letter" Technique created by John Gray (yes, of Mars and Venus books fame.) Basically it is to go through and express a whole "FLOW OF FEELINGS" ... saying (shouting) or writing, "I feel angry that ... " until you don't have any more to say, and then going on to the other feelings... which if you are doing it optimally, will "come out" on their own.... from anger, will often come SADNESS (I feel sad that ... ) and then sometimes FEAR (I feel afraid that... ) and then I feel regret / guilt that ... ) etc .. .There is more information in John Gray's book What You Feel You can Heal, including a "response letter" as part of the process, which can also be very healing/ freeing in my experience.

There are also some other useful posts about anger (look for the ones by Darko) on these threads which you might find helpful:

For old anger, I agree, journaling is great.
For new anger that arises in daily life, I simply stop thinking and that completely negates it before it gets registered in the brain. It is radical and works great.

Barbara,
It is not repressing because it never gets into an emotion in the first place. I preempt the stressful, upsetting situation and simply stop thinking, float through it.
If I am driving and I sense that somebody is going to cut in front of me, I just stop thinking and listen to the radio attentively, feel my hands on the steering wheel.

I am symptoms free at this point. I hear people (that have been healed by Sarno) say that when they have a twinge, they yell at their brain or try to reason with it.
For me, I just stop thinking and it is instantaneous, the twinge goes away.

Repressing happens unconsciously, you are not aware you are doing it. Suppressing is conscious behavior, like "biting your lips", to prevent yourself from saying something you might be sorry for. As you become more aware of your thoughts, the "being in the now" thing--otherwise known as paying attention--you will become better able to deal with things as they happen consciously. This state of mindpower will prevent stuff from building up in your reservoir of TMS rage, and then spilling over the TMS dam, forming into TMS distraction symptoms, to prevent outbursts of socially unacceptable rage.

Awesome reply Tom. Actually Dr. Sarno says in the divided mind, what if someone cant say something because of work, family etc. He said to just be aware that it bothers you. So the awareness somehow causes relaxation about the issue. The affirmations and the acting different without letting yourself and body strain to the stimulus, with time prevents its negative effects
