Here's a chronological list of my last year and a half...
The injury occurred on November 13, 2011. I reached down from my truck tailgate to pick up a deer that weighed 275 pounds. I used my legs to lift and at the end of the lift I jerked with my back and felt a "burn" near my right PSIS. I took advil that night and drove home 6 hours the next day. The pain was pretty severe. There was no radicular pain. I took flexeril for a few days and felt decent about a week after the injury. Three weeks after the injury I bent down to zip my 3 year olds pants and felt the same burn near my right PSIS. After this I started seeing a chiropractor and had some relief, but it never got completely better. I started a medrol dose pack in early December 2011. This helped for about 2 weeks. I had an MRI in late December 2011. There was a small bulge at L5-S1. Had a epidural steroid injection in early January 2012. Felt better for about 2 weeks. Had a lateral steroid injection at L5-S1 about a month later. Felt better for about 3 weeks. In May 2012 I rode in an aluminum fishing boat for about 14 miles in rough water. My back spasmed like it never had before. I never really got over this. After this I had an SI joint injection, facet joint injection, and multiple trigger point injections at different times. None of these injections helped at all. I have tried accupuncture, Active Release Therapy, multiple massage therapists, multiple back support belts, SI belts, inversion therapy, chiropractors, neurologists and neurosurgeons. For the last 5 months my right gluteus medius has stayed tight. In January 2013 a neurologist in Fort Smith, Arkansas injected 200 units of BOTOX in my right gluteus maximus. My Gluteus medius is still tight and painful. I'm not sure if it is from a nerve issue or from a chronic SI joint inflammation. I had a Lumbar and Pelvic MRI in January 2013. I took a 2 week dose of Prednisone after this MRI. It did nothing for my pain. Things that make my pain worse are riding in cars, riding ATV(don't do this much anymore), standing in one place for more than five minutes, running (don't do this much anymore). Sometimes the pain is in the right gluteus medius, sometimes near the SI joint, and sometimes it hurts on the other side near the midline. I feel decent at night lying on my stomach. My pain is always there during the day. I do feel better stretching. I have been working out with a personal trainer to try make my back stronger and I feel better when I work out and stretch with him. I have tried to include everything chronologically in this email but it has been 16 months of ongoing pain since the injury and I'm sure I have left something. I was recently told I might have an annular tear. Of course after hearing this I panicked and felt worse. The pain moves from my right glute to low back.
After reading Sarno's book I accepted it as TMS and felt somewhat better. I have jogged and taken multiple 5 hr trips since reading his book. I have pain in the car that comes and goes. Rarely am I comfortable. Any advice will be appreciated. I didn't know if TMS can occur from an injury or if it comes on by itself. Thanks. |

Well I am going through my own diagnostic dilemma at the moment for my knee but yours has a couple of features which seem suggestive of a mind body thing going on, one the pain moves, and two it gets better when you work out -- if it were a major structural thing logic I think would say it would get worse or at least not get better? Also, the fact that the physical treatments have not helped. |

wpt7: Congradulations on the monster deer! Most of mine were under 100 lbs. The injury you spoke of has healed long ago and what remains is a convincing excuse for pain. I suggest you forget about all the stuff that is in your first post and write another, twice as long, about all the psychological stress you have been having. All this suff about botox and mri's and steroids is completely irrelevant. Good luck. |

As an animal lover, I am appalled that you both have to resort to killing animals for sport, are you not financially sound? Are you so angry at the world? Come to Lake Lopez with me and feel the joy of feeding grapes to the mule deer, it’s very healing!

I ate deer frequently growing up, but I can't eat wild meat at all now. Just too strong for my taste.

wpt7,
I am sorry to hear of your many pains. Of course, we cannot diagnose anyone here on this website, but what you have described sounds a lot like many stories I have heard of people who had TMS. It appears in your case that the lifting acted as an immediate trigger and then you have embraced the idea that your ongoing pain is due to that lifting back on Nov 13, 2011. If you can get an appointment with a TMS doctor to confirm this it would be great, but if that is not possible then you need to convince yourself by reading Sarno's books that your pain is due to TMS. That is the essential first step.
Best wishes!
