I wonder if others think if they had taken another road in life would they be in TMS. With my fragile nervous system doing 9 years of college and driving myself with a straight 4.0 GPA was just plain out of touch (and I was not an easy student). Then choosing a career where I had to see 6 to 9 damaged people in high stress was also a poor choice.....not to mention when you become the expert you cant show any vulnerability or ask for help.
So 30 years ago I quit my practice and went into the outdoor recreation industry while still writing health articles. Problem was, as my wife told me on one of our fist dates: “Your intelligence will take your nervous system place it cant go.” If you know the Peter Principle – well that was always me.
I would start our with a funky position and in short order I was in executive management and beyond my skill set for that job.
The people I have met and talked to on this forum are all bright, intelligent and mostly type A. So do you see any parallels in my pattern to yours?
Did your intelligence take you to places where your nervous system buckled? Hmmmm...just had a thought – my driven nature also drove my body with too much exercise and athletic competitions......seems to be a pattern here.

That reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by Dr. Laurence Johnson Peter, inventor of the PETER PRINCIPLE: "The hot-dog is the noblest of dogs; it feeds the hand that bites it."

You bet. Same story. I started as an engineer in a company and 7 years later found myself as Engineering VP of a $600 million in revenue public company. And I was constantly worried to death of what could go wrong. I also thought like your acquaintance that I was a fraud.

Perhaps you were a fraud, but not in the way that you may think. Perhaps your mind told you a lot of negative things about yourself and you uncritically believed those negative thoughts and you defined yourself by them. The thought "I am a fraud" is in itself a fraudulent statement. What is fraud to begin with other than a pack of lies masking as truth? |

Shawn, Thanks for your thoughts. That is something I went over with Don Dubin and yes, I was clearly not a fraud. I came here on a short term temporary assignment from a European country and ended up on the fast track. The company did well. We released very good products etc... I left that job because my symptoms became unbearable and I thought by being a freelance consultant I could manage better stress. It was unfortunately not the case at all. |

I have a MSc in Mechanical Engineering. I do work that is challenging enough for me right now and is mainly about hardcore engineering. The few times that I got involved in the financial and management part of a project were enough for me to make the decision that I don't want that. Although my title brings the capability of having a role as a project manager, I know I will get too stressed from all the decisions I will have to make, particularly the ones that are only in the interest of the company's profit margin but which I can't rhyme with my conscience. To h@ll with the money that I miss out on, my mental (and therefore physical) health is more important to me. I admire my dad about taking responsibilities beyond his capabilities, having seen him suffer from head aches and all kinds of stress related problems helped me in making this decision for myself. |
