I am having a flare up of my back problems this week. I have had my TMS not cured but definitely under control for the last10 months. I have been very active and not limited by my occasional low back and hip pain. The last couple of days I have had an extreme flare-up--back spasms and extreme pain when driving in the car. My mind immediately returns to the "what if this is structual" and the irrational thoughts overtake what I know. I have been rereading the book and trying to continue with my workouts but I thought a new post would help me stay focused on the psychological nature of my problem.
Anyone else with flare ups and strategies for dealing with them?
Thanks

Hi Scout

Sorry I don't have time to respond fully just now, but I'll look back tonight. One thing I'll say, though - something that helped me was to note how long the flare lasts this time. You'll find, I'm sure, that it won't last anything like the time it did when you were focussed on the physical only. That will help you become confident that you are getting better.

Another thing, your TMS 'gremlin' will make you think that something physical is going on - there's probably years of conditioning to overcome - that was my experience and that of many of us who post here.

Best wishes

Anne

Hi Scout...
I would always review the book(I had the 'crux' type of info hi-lited for a quick go through) and than the healing process will usually kick in again just like it did the first time.I would write, read and think,think,think....

Don't worry...I had a profound resolution ,and the relapses came none the less...doubt is a demon and information kills him.

As long as your willing to review, you'll be AOK

peace

Hi again, Scout,

I've been reading your back posts and note that you have been working on de-conditioning.

With that in mind, one thing that I found very helpful with this, was that I learned to condition myself to separate the surge of fear that always followed the onset of pain, be it back pain, IBS symptoms - whatever.

That first little surge of fear would kick in so quickly after the first twinge that I was not aware it was happening. I can't remember where I read to do that, but it's worth a try, because certainly, in my case, that little surge would allow the pain to escalate, then the fear would get worse, the pain worse still - a really nasty escalating cycle.

If you just mentally note each time you first notice a pain, the fear that follows it. By doing that each time, I gradually stopped the surge of fear coming and averted the escalation of pain.

Also, Dave had a really good post that might be worth re-reading - 'What is the Goal' on Nov. 3rd 2004.

Best wishes

Anne

Quick note.
When I say "I was cured in 3-5 weeks" I must note that the very last symptom to go was sciatica while driving the car. That hung around for months, but was so minor compared to my previous predicament that I left it undealt with.

It only happened on the way HOME from work, not driving to work or any other driving time.I finally got sick of it.I had to turn the radio off and have a talk with myself.

I at first thought it was because my father died behind the wheel, but that didn't account for the timing(re:It's always serving a purpose,or a remnant of conditioning)

It finally occured to me that I was leaving work to fight TRAFFIC(rage) and my reward for a 10-12 hour workday was the moral imperative to be a good DAD(fear, rage, selfishness)when I got home.
As I focused on these thoughts, the sciatica left and never came back.

It's all part of the process...you're right on time, and I'm sure when you continue what you're already doing ,it too will vanish.

peace
