For those of you who ascribe to the “Strain” theory you might enjoy this. I have a friend who is probably the number one expert on stress, Dr. Robert Sapolsky at Stanford Medical School – he wrote the book: Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers.

Bob says that our physiology is designed to: eat – sleep – eliminate and have sex....everything else is stress. He also says that being in a vehicle that moves faster than a man can run is overload for the nervous system and that we are totally adapted to enduring a major stress event...but not the modern day of the drip, drip of stress.

For several million years we have very brief periods of high stress then hours and weeks of boredom and monotony. This is the same pattern people had living on farms for hundreds of years until the move to cities. Up until a few years back people lived a horse ride away from their entire family and relatives – this was a huge stress buffer.

Alvin Toffler predicted these stress breakdowns in his book Future Shock written in 1970:

This was over 40 years ago before personal computers and more shock !!

this explained why mindbody illness rate is higher in the city than on the farm. Higher in advance, fast pace western countries than slow pace life style of countries like Bhuttan, Thailand. It explained why the tms/axiety rate shoot sky high in China after they openned their country to the outside world and achieved economic success.

Thanks for the link.

For many years my wife and I would spend a month or two in small Mexican fishing village in the winter. Our days were cooking on a camp stove, walking a mile down the beach into town in the morning for breakfast pastries – sitting on the beach watching shore birds and dolphins – a two hour siesta after lunch – more beach sitting or reading and another walk down the beach each evening for a treat and the unusual family gatherings in the small village with Mariachi music and singing.

When we came back to the USA we went into total sensory overload. I have had the same thing happen when out to sea sailing for long periods or long back pack trips.

Too many colors, too many smells – noise that made me want to scream and just tooooo much of everything. We don’t realize what normal is – or should be!

So the secret it to not let the sensory overoload overwhelm you. You can still do everything you want, but with ease and no crazyness over it and condition yourself in this new way.

Dammit.
I was going to suggest we all run away to the mountains and start a commune. I'd like a husband for every sign of the zodiac...

Plum and TT - You guys are always so good for comic relief. You never disappoint.

All1Spirit - Thanks for your post on stress. My husband enjoyed it also.

My husband and I retired to Panama in 2005. It is a slower pace of life - but changing rapidly. Panamanians are generally so laid back, I almost hate to see the strain happen to them. We have a large property on the Pacific Ocean. When I came here, I had to learn to speak Spanish and I still don't speak it really well. That is sometimes a source of stress for me. I, too, have a very unstressful existence compared to my former life. Unfortunately, I have not been able to enjoy it to the fullest because of my past traumas. I was physically abused as a child, had an alcoholic parent, my first husband died of cancer at 32, was the victim of attempted rape and mugging, etc. The list just goes on. However, I am so grateful to be able to finally work on myself for a change. I am grateful for that.

Oh and did mention that I got hit by a car when I was 5? You just gotta laugh!!
