I am new to TMS and still learning so I have two questions:

What are the common symptoms and maybe those not so common?

What makes it worse - what helps?

Thanks

From what I understand, the main TMS symptom is the sensation of pain or extreme discomfort anywhere in the body.

The primary thing that makes it worse is any type of mental strain and relieving the strain makes it better.

The most common for me is tinnitus and panic attack. The not so common is: once I got a birthmark mode to that started to swell and bleed. It happened right after I read an article about skin cancer and went to the beach for a week vacation. It heal nicely after I think it is tms/anxiety.

Refuse to fear any and all symptoms is what helped me the most.

It's actually quite interesting that somatisation symptoms in Western culture are mainly muscular skeletal whilst in Africa etc they are more often than not gastro internal...there seems to be a variety of reasons/theories explaining this but cultural acceptance of types of illness seems a strong contender. I know Sarno mentioned that back pain had become the new ulcer and sees this development along similar lines

I think that the TMS/stress illness/somatised symptom that somebody is likely to experience is the symptom that scares them the most...fear and catastrophising really are the fuel for the symptom.

People who somatise are very susceptible to a process known as somatic amplification which is basically being far too in tune with the body and having a heightened sensitivity to body noise. What a somatiser perceives as a bodily sensation which may not even be painful may not be even noticed or registered by somebody who doesn't amplify these 'noises'....this is the problem in many ways, very often what we perceive and fear as symptoms are actually normal and benign body noises but we fear these dump adrenaline on them and get stuck in a vicious circle of pouring gasoline on our fire of worry and fear.

What helps is obviously learning to not fear our symptoms, noise or pain but of course this is far easier said then done. I'm sort of the opinion that very often you have to get to a point when you just get sick and tired of feeling sick and tired and just take the necessary leap of faith as there is nothing left to turn to. It's not easy but then as they often say, life's a bitch then you die.

...oops. Meant to say my symptoms over the past 5 years have included:

Dizziness
De realisation
Frequent Urination
Chest Pain
Chronic Knee Pain
Plantar Fascia
Ulnar Nerve Entrapment
Twitching
Chronic Rhinitis
Sciatica
SI Joint Dysfunction
Chronic Headaches
Unquenchable Thirst
IBS
Skin Parathesia
Internal Tremors

There are probably more but they are the ones that tended to bother me the most. I had the usual symptom shifting patterns of as soon as one issue was resolved a new one would pop along to take its place. My main issue centered around health anxiety in that I was convinced I had various medical conditions the usual suspects being MS, ALS, Lupus, Liver Disease and various cancers...oh the joy!
