There are so many thoughts which invade our brains. Thoughts that consume us, confuse us, complicate us. Through my work with Dr. Sarno, I've come to believe something as strongly as I believe in myself: we really DO only use 6% of our brains. We have no idea what they can do to influence us. We are often unaware, and many of our actions and thoughts and STARK beliefs are a result of these meddling brains who think they are helping us. Thank you so much, our lovely brains. By NO thank you. Let's do something differently.

If you want to be well on your way of leaving TMS behind, please do the following: this comes directly from my wrk w/Sarno; he wrote and created it. It's only mine to explain.

(Please refer to the Mind/body Prescription or The Divided Mind if you'd like to reference this particular work.)

Make three lists. The first should be entitled "childhood." This is only a bulleted list. Write childhood on the top of the page, and then list every little thing that jumps out of your mind that could be a point of contention, sadness, concern, anger, conflict, fear, etc. No one is looking. Just try it. Don't word it correctly. Don't be concerned who would judge it. Just make the list.

Then do the same for two other lists: "everyday life" and "my personality." The personality list should embody everything that disables you about yourself: "I can't seem to function if I think that people are mad at me." "I love doing good things for people, but then later on when they don't appreciate me, I suffer." "I never think anything I do is good enough." Etc etc.

Ok.

Now, systematically, take one bullet EACH and put each phrase or feeling on the top of a separate page (either written or computer) and WRITE. Don't write for your mother, or your public or your audience or your kids or your false self. Just ****ing write. Let your words flow. Let them take you down each bunny trail they are creating. Don't be afraid. Within these words, you will find healing. You will say, "aha!" You will cry and rest and lay your head on the table. You will have a moment where you unabashedly learn yourself. You might laugh. You might panic. Regardless, just embrace it. That tree was falling anyway. You just weren't paying attention.

I didn't have anyone to advise me when I was doing the Sarno program for myself 10 years ago, but somehow through the grace of God I found my way. I wish the same for you. Once your truths come to light, hold your pain in your hand and extend it out into the air (we used to do this on the panel - just picture a Shakespearean actor extending his arm) and say "I don't need to hold you in here, I would rather engage you out HERE!" And then, think about the truth you just found. This is why you hurt, not your MRI or your diagnosis. It takes practice, but it works. I promise. I'm living proof.

Great tip Nicole. It is perfect. It gives some initial guidance but it then allows you to go freely on your own.
I remember being in front of the Schechter worksheets and being paralyzed by the rigidity of it.

Nicole,
You gave me the incentive for journaling from reading your book. I thank you for that.

Have you got any suggestions for me about my addiction to strain (strainaholic) that I posted about this morning?

Can I even work on this directly or is everything going to be indirectly over time (affirmations, journaling, utta utta acceptance)

Thanks Nicole.
I stopped journaling a while ago because I felt I was going nowhere with it. You've inspired me to go again, but this time with no holding back. I have certainly done that in the past.
Do you think it's a good idea to close a journaling session by writing something positive? Maybe focusing on gratitude and giving thanks for the beauty in our lives.

Hi Nicole,

Just finished your pfd and now I'm going to buy the hardback. I love your writing style and how you make me feel like you're right here sitting on my couch talking to me. You know so much about what has been going on in my mind. When I read the part about you wanting to just go home I almost fell out of my chair! I've thought that many times and now I KNOW why. Thank you.

You're a tough cookie for still coming back here and I admire you.

Plum,

The only reason I stop short of suggesting to end with a positive notion, is that I don't want you to pre-think anything about this kind of journaling, nor do I want you to judge yourself if by chance it doesn't feel positive at the end. I want you to spill your gut wrenching guts, and I want there to be nothing that resembles "polite." I want you to say the worst things that no one should ever hear, and then I want you to erase the whole thing, shred it into a public garbage can, delete the unsaved document. I want you to kick and scream and hate everything and everyone and yourself...

and then...

I want you to gently, lovingly, hopefully... forgive that little girl who had no choice but to feel that way. If you want to write it, then that's fine. The most important thing is that you conceive of it. I often say, patience and kindness is like the sugary lemon after the shot of vodka... it stops the burn. it helps the medicine go down...

you have to chase the honesty with your sweet love for yourself.

it goes down much easier that way.

I just re-read your post, Sylvia, and here are my thoughts: Don't worry about that strained thinking. Everyone feels that way, to come extent. Just give up. (Odd advice, but the advice that heals.) The best way to do this work, is in the lovely realm of surrender.

You are flawed. So what? So are we all. You think too much, strain too much, worry too much... (SO DO WE ALL...) Just let that go like last night's news program. Once the pressure is gone, the healing can begin.

As one of my favorite bands, Matchbox 20, Sings, "Let it go. Let it roll right off your shoulders, don't ya know? The hardest part is over. Let it in. Let your clarity define you in the end... You will only just remember how it feels. Our lives are made, in these small hours. These little wonders, these twists and turns of fate..."

Little Wonders. It's a good song :)
