So as some of you know I was diagnosed with TMS by Schecter. I am embracing it fully, but have another problem (a somewhat embarrassing one). After I had my daughter two and a half years ago I was diagnosed with a separated pubic bone. Every doctor and PT I went to asked me if I was incontinent. At the time I only had slight leakage which I attributed to childbirth.
Anyway, now I have begun running, albeit five minutes a day, but I am leaking again. Last night I woke up with a terrible urge to go to the bathroom. When I went my bladder did not really seem full. This morning I feel a similar urge. Could this be TMS rearing its ugly head? I sure hope so.

Hi Sara,
Thanks for your kind words in your previous post, it's greatly appreciated. Regarding your bladder symptoms, it could well be TMS morphing. I did a quick "Search" using the words "urinary urgency" and "frequent urination" and a number of archived threads came up with that topic cited. Also Bill mentioned that Dr. Sarno wrote abput it as a possible TMS equivalent. Using the "SEARCH" function of this site, those citations will be highlighted in yellow.
Good luck Sara, keep on truckin', tt |

Sara,
I get the bladder thing from time to time. Right now it's not acting up (I've got my hands full with all my other fun TMS stuff) but there are times when I can't sneeze or cough too hard or I'll pee my pants! I saw a gynecologist a couple weeks ago who performed a test on me that checks your bladder (they said it's like an EKG of the bladder). They put a catheter into your urethra (fun!) and pump sterile water slowly into your bladder. They put in one cup, then two, etc. and ask you "If you had this much liquid in your bladder would you need to go to the bathroom or could you hold it." After they fill you up with liquid to the point you are going to burst, they have you stand up and cough and they check and see if anything comes out. I was told that my muscle control is very good and that I just have "a small bladder." Ironically, I haven't experienced the leakage thing since that time.
It seems like a common thing, especially in women who have had natural childbirth more than once (like myself) to have bladder control problems. Have you ever tried Kegel exercises to strengthen the muscles in that area?

TT, Thanks for the information, it was very helpful.
Laura, It does seem that this is common in women who have had natural childbirth. I did go to the doctor today because when I was running it felt like things were not right with my uterus. Anyway it doesn't seem that anything has fallen, both my uterus and my bladder are in the right place. Phew. I also do not have a bladder infection.
So...what do you think? I didn't really take notice of this until I started running. I think before if I sneezed I would sometimes leak, but not much. I think it is TMS moving to a spot it knows I will notice, but I am not positive. Tomorrow I am going to send Schecter an email and ask him. Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated. The only other thing it could be is stress incontinence. Uggh!

I posted a while back about this - do a search as Tennis Tom suggested for archive posts. I have had it several times, sometimes with burning sensation and pain etc. Have been to genitourinary clinic and was told nothing was wrong. The doctor there told me to drink cranberry juice - I had a whole carton that day and after that it went away - the placebo effect.
It's just another distraction - tell it to take a hike. |

Sara,
Could be TMS, but as a woman who has all sorts of gyn. issues, just have it checked out first by a Gyn, you real good about. If nothing shows up, you have your answer. Best of Luck, Colleen |

Thank you all for your replies. Dr. Schecter did email me back today and said it was not tms. I do not have the urgent feeling anymore so I guess I will really concentrate on my kegels.

Sara,
The only thing I can add is that my wife had symptoms that sound pretty close to what you have. She was rescribed the Kegel exercises and she says that she feels much better and is not having a "leakage" problem. I can try to find out more about her condition to see if it matches your symptoms.
Good luck,

Absolutely and definitely tms Sara. The fact that the problem became worse after the doctors and PT asked you about it is an indication of how your mind has seized the opportunity to make this a 'legitimate' problem which of course it is not.
By all means do the kegels but I would say that you do it for another reason like great sex instead of ...sorry uh....what was that you thought you had?
Good Luck & Good Health Mala |

Sara,
I just read in a Natural women's journal that "leakage" can be caused from a lowered estrogen level. Just thought I would pass that along. I dealt with a low progestrone level for years....now both levels are very low as I had a total hyst. one year ago....and I do not take any hormone replacement....tried for about 4 months and then stopped. I tried to send Dr. Schetcher and email after listening to all his CD's....the email got bounced back. Has it changed since the recording of the tapes? Colleen |

Hey all,
Thank you for your replies. The urge to go to the bathroom has gone away. I actually have not run in several days, but I do not feel so worried anymore.
Colleen, I too had problems with very low progesterone and estrogen, but my levels are fine now. The email address I have for Schechter is SchechterD@aol.com.

Sara,
Glad to hear that your problem is better.
Thanks for the email, but that is the one that bounces back.

Colleen, I am surprised that is the one that bounces back. It is the one I used. You could try calling his office. I don't know his number offhand, but it is on his website. I am sorry I can't help you.

I have had chronic need to urinate as a TMS symptom; and it began w/ a cognitive worry as did yours (Sara's) -- which is a key / suspicious clue. It went away when I began to treat it as TMS but before that had continued as long as I went to doctors about it.
I treated it with "paradoxical intention", like many of my symptoms. I drank as much water as I could and then forced myself to hold it for about 90 minutes ( I did that several times one day ). Pretty painful, but seemed to help break the pattern!
