 Symptoms get better when VERY stressed?

I have a friend with the same bladder illness I have, IC. She got a new job 6 weeks ago, one that is highly stressful. She told me her bladder and fibro has never felt better in 6 years? I believe IC is mind body syndrome, but it confuses me on why she would feel better putting herself under more stress? She is a very intense person, talks VERY fast and hyper, like me. I am just wondering if its possible that now that her thoughts feel tons of stress, her bladder does not need to act up? I am still new to all this and after reading mind body prescription I am still confused by the whole thing, or how to treat it for that matter, although I do believe it is the reason for my issues.

mchan, TMS is based on stress/fear/anger that is largely unconscious. What you are describing below is conscious stress. It can also have a deleterious effect on the body but it doesn't escape your awareness. I used to get what I called stress colds whenever I was under a lot of pressure at work and working long hours - and I knew where it came from. But, I also had tension headaches and neck pain that were chronic and present even when I thought I had no stress. I learned that unconscious stress can sabotage your health just as easily or more because its cause commonly goes undetermined.

TMS is a distraction from facing life's problems head-on--a defense mechanism. Your friend is now distracted by her new job. That's good if she likes her new job and it lets her forget and become deconditioned from her TMS symptom distraction.

Interesting! So, because her brain is busy thinking all the time about the job, there is no need for pain to distract her from her emotions? Our brains are very tricky!

SteveO discusses this on page 106 of his book "THE GREAT PAIN DECEPTION":

"...My focus had now shifted from one obsession to another. My mind's eye was no longer primarily staring at my body or my recovery pace."

"...My attention and focus were being shifted away from my pain, and reeducation was occurring. My recovery was progressing, but more importantly, it was progressing in the correct manner--by shifting focus."

When you really focus on something else beside your pain, the pain usually disappeared. Norman Cousin can make his pain disappear for hours with just some laughter exercise.
