Hi guys, I've been treating my chronic pain as tms for a while now and have had some success but about 6 weeks ago had a bad spasm and have remained in much pain and restricted mobility since.
While my confidence and basic understanding of tms is quite good I still had some doubts that were mostly driven by pain increases and anxiety related to those increases. I seem to get hit hard when I do and have developed bad fear patterns that most likely perpetuate the pain.
So a few days ago I woke up and was getting ready for work and sort of had a melt down over the pain. I was so confused as to how the pain could just get this much worse and remain like this for so long, Especially when i have no additional source of stress or identifiable trigger to look at as the source.
I felt desperate and dont take meds for relief so I thought screw it, Im gonna go to my local gp, Get some pain meds for once and demand another MRI, Xray and full check up.
In my moment of just being so completely sick of the pain I thought I needed to do something to improve my complete belief in tms as I think this must be the reason for it refusing to leave my body. The little bit of fear and doubt must be fuelling it.
Another reason for the tests is it was a great chance to size them up against my much lower level pain days. My last MRI was over 2 years ago when i had not heard of tms. Nothing came up apart from a minute bulge that the specialist i was seeing disregarded as a pain source.
So in 2 years my pain has gone from a little nagging discomfort of about a 2/10..... To now raging at about a non stop 8/10. I was seriously nervous the day of getting the results back and had butterflies and was scared and so damn anxious. My main fear would be some normal ageing etc would show up and possibly fuel tms doubt but I couldnt just keep going on like this..
So i get them back...Go back to my car & open them in private. THEY WERE EXACTLY THE SAME!!! At the bottom of the report it said 'There is no evidence to attribute the symptoms'. It really is tms proof and while I know some would frown on the very fact I even had another MRI I did it in a moment of just being so fed up with the pain and for once in what seems like a while something went my way.
The fact that the pain has gone through the freakin roof but not one physical change has occurred in my back it is obviously 100% psychological and the risk has paid off. I haven't had the pain decrease yet but i sure do feel better mentally.
Im trying to look at why the pain increase now I know there is no way its physical, My gut tells me the tms is holding on with it's all and 'protecting' me from the emotions. Im starting to think psychotherapy may be on the cards as i just cant seem to break the current pattern just yet.
See ya, Thanks for reading.

This is great news for you, Aussie. There was definitely doubt in your mind and you decided that the only way to convince your brain was to have another MRI. Brave, considering what huge nocebos could have lurked within that report. No need to justify to anyone about the scan: " I know some would frown on the very fact I even had an MRI." This is simply your inner critic having a go at you. Many of us will be cheering, not frowning. Well, I am anyway.
I hope you find a suitable therapist. Have you looked into Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy?

That's fantastic Aussie. I think it's so smart that you requested another MRI. I think when people have pain, they should see a doctor immediately. Sometimes as TMSers we have a tendency to attribute our pain to TMS. And often it is. But in my case, I've attributed severe pain to TMS and would just keep suffering for months only to find out I had incarcerated hernia, another time I was diagnosed with cellulitis, then it was fistulas, then multiple infections etc. So, I'll suffer a couple months thinking oh the pain is TMS and do all that I'm supposed to do, only to get excruciatingly sick and then go OK better go to a doctor or ER.
I keep making the same mistake over and over and I've really messed my body up. I'm now fighting multiple raging infections and not getting better. I let it get to far and one doctor told me it's so bad I don't think you can be cured. So, now what? I just die? It's really scary for me now. And I wish that I had gone to the doctor immediately when I had pain. I could have gotten these problems at the beginning.
So Aussie, I think you did the right thing. I'm glad it came out to be TMS for you. And now that the well is not poisoned and you know your OK, you start healing and feeling better.
It's strange, even though I know some people here are suffering from TMS, I find myself to be jealous of those that actually have it and have the ability to cure themselves.
When I first learned of TMS, I was ecstatic. I thought the onus was on me to heal myself and I wouldn't have to rely on crappy soulless doctors. I get physically ill every time I have to be around one. My pain actually lessened when I believed that I wouldn't have to deal with them anymore. I became emotionally, physically and spiritually better. Unfortunately, that only lasted a short while. Now I'm back to the torturous process of having to deal with doctors.
I would say if your experiencing pain, get thoroughly checked out by a doctor. If in the end you find out it's really TMS be grateful. It's a blessing when you can heal yourself with your mind. And you don't have to deal with the medical community that will most likely just let you down.

Hi Bugbear,
I notice you are from the uk, do you know any therapists in the uk who practise this type of therapy?
I have a lot of symptoms during the night while I am sleeping, which then wake me up so I'm sure there is a lot going on in my unconscious that I am totally unaware of!! Unlocking this would be good!!
Aussie, well done for getting the mri scan, you needed to boost your confidence in the diagnosis and now you have your answer. You will get better, just takes time. |

TaylorJoh, Don't you live in NorCal? If so there are some TMS doctors you may see to differentiate between what is structural and what is benign.

Hi catmac,
See here for a list of therapists in the UK: http://www.istdp.org.uk/therapists2.html
I saw a therapist for a short while last year but she wasn't an ISTDT therapist. She suggested journalling just before bed. I was never very good at journalling. I prefer thinking and reciting affirmations to myself. I had been looking for an ISTDT for my daughter recently after hearing positive feedback.

Thanks for this Bugbear. I hope you find one for your daughter who can help her.
I'm not quite sure how this type of therapy works. I did see a psychotherapist for a short while and it certainly helped me unload. She was mostly silent throughout our hour, there wasnt much interaction and no suggestion as to what changes I could make This was my first experience with counselling so maybe thats how it's meant to be.
Good luck |

Now I was unpleasant with cellulitis. Can I get rid of it by calendula? https://homeremedies.info/cellulitis/ It's said that calendula is acknowledged as an significantly helpful tip from the list of home remedies for cellulitis with anti-inflammation and anti-infection effects. Also it can soften the tender skin and promote the healing process. Does it really work? Any ideas? |

Hi - my sister in law had surgery to remove most of her colon because of cancer. The wound from her surgery had not healed for a long time. She tried a poultice this week of calendula and yarrow dried herbs/flowers that an herbalist recommended and it has gotten much better. I was really surprised. The herbs were dirt cheap to buy. |
