I recently started a new job and have felt tense and found the whole experience a touch stressful. I have found myself 'looking' for the pain again as the job is quite mundane with me spending a lot of time at the computer. I have been applying TMS principles to get me through but something else has struck me...
When I was younger I would play music in my head and this would be a way of entertaining / motivating myself when I was bored - gave my mind something to focus on. I realised that I no longer do this and wondered if this could be a useful tool for people in breaking the pain cycle?
The music could remind you of a fond memory, be motivational or whatever...it will hopefully heighten your mood and stop the pain being the first thing you think about when you stand up!

Hi James,
I suppose if it helps you then it's good!
I'm a jazz musician and I have constantly got bebop melodies in my head - it drives me beserk to be honest with you!
Maybe you could try making your desk a bit more interesting with a great holiday photo, or a pot plant or set little goals to achieve to keep you thinking in the present and move your mind away from thinking towards the pain - keep moving things around. Or get up and make a drink - rather than worry about the pain, why not think about the nice arouma of the coffee or the feeling of the warm mug in your hands? Have you seen my email about 'treats'? Maybe that might work for you?

Hey James, I play music in my head too and it helps....especially when my ears are ringing. Good luck with your new job.

When he pitched his way to being world series MVP,Orel Hershiser would sing Hymns on the mound.I read his autobiography and he said it was to deal with the nerves.
I write songs, and than sing them to myself all day at work......otherwise I'd get reeeeeeeeally bored...The radio selection is usually classic rock (zzzzzzzzzz)
I am a hitting coach and I encourage all Baseball players to associate their favorite rock or hip hop song with hitting.....it keeps tension from building up in the body.Whenever a hitter is struggling it is because they have lost their Rhythm......I don't try to teach it to them...they have to find their own.
I imagine their is a "groove" to almost every task, and they would be individually tailored for each personality.
"Spoonman" by soundgarden is my hitting song.
If I'm rushing than it's "Pretty noose"
what's yours??

I think that playing music in your head as a tool for breaking the pain cycle can be very helpful. Everyone has to tailor their recovery from TMS to a certain extent and visualising a tune can be a useful tool for some people
In fact, it is recognised as such - the first time I came across this idea was many years ago when I was expecting my first baby. I was attending classes in natural childbirth run by an organisation called The National Childbirth Trust. One thing they had you practise was running a tune over and over in your head until it became a mantra that you could focus on during childbirth.
I chose a classical tune called Fur Elise.
I didn't use it, by the way. By the time I had my daughter I had changed my mind about natural childbirth and had told the hospital staff to throw pain killers at me.
