Interesting. The more I tried to have "good" posture the more I hurt because having good posture for me meant tensing. The more I just relaxed and let my shoulders drop and back curve the less pain I had.

Tom as you can appreciate it's a hard idea to let go of, as it's been reinforced by many seemingly knowledgeable professionals, and the explanation is at least superficially sensible -- forward head putting 20 lbs. of extra pressure on the neck muscles, blah blah blah.

I agree with TaylorJoh, my pain was made worse with the "correct posture," and once I started slouching more, the muscles let go more and relaxed...my back was even being taped by a physical therapist at one time with leukotape because I needed to "relearn good posture." Amazing now that I look back, it was only making everything worse...

I couldn't agree more. As a runner, I've had therapists tell me my pain was due to my gait or running form and try to fix me. But I always wondered how I was able to run for years with my "bad form" and have no problems at all.

I see it all the time - runners who should be in pain and injured - they look so funny when they run - but they're perfectly fine. My husband has the worst pronation --- the wear on his shoes looks like he's walking on the side of them. I exaggerate but he definitely does not have a "neutral" stride. But he picks up any old 2nd hand shoes at the thrift store and runs miles in them without problems. If he listened to the common wisdom he'd be crumpled on the ground. But he has a very carefree attitude - pretty much the opposite of the TMS personality.

OK just to play devil's advocate here, if I sit all day in a hunched, forward posture, day after day, with all sorts of extra weight from my head straining my neck muscles and pulling it out of its usual alignment supported by the body, why COULDN'T that cause or aggravate muscle pain?
