I'm new to the forum and would be grateful for any advice or help. After reading the books by Dr Sarno I am convinced that my lower back pain and leg pain which I have had for several years are due to TMS. It has been a long painful journey but I am finally making some progress off my own back (excuse the pun!). I was wondering if anyone had any tips that have been useful. I have a lot of fear connected to my back from previous pain episodes and my pain has taken over my life :( After reading about TMS I felt the pain improve and feel a bit more positive. Best wishes to you all. |

Welcome to the new paradigm. If you've had your back examined and all that is revealed are the normal aging processes then you're pain is coming to an end. All you need is an open mind and deep belief and some information.
The back heals itself over time so your pain should never last for years unless there is an unconscious process perpetuating it.
Gather all the TMS information you can. Stay active. Run through your mind the possible reasons that your brain would want to give you a pain in the back. Do you fit the Type T personality?
Healing from mindbody pain is a personal journey. The idea is not to try to heal but to take the reason for the pain away.
Do the breathing techniques, do daily relaxation techniques, be aggressive physically, be appreciative for everything you have each night, force your mind off of your body, and forgive anyone you may be harboring any grievances toward.
Be persistent and imagine yourself as pain-free. See it in your mind's eye and become what you desire.
Be patient,
Happiness..

Thank you Steve for your reply and really helpful comments. As for the type T personality I am a compulsive perfectionist and very self critical. I have just completed my PhD (part time whilst working full time) and now run my own business - so quite motivated! I had an MRI scan a few years ago which showed little and basically the Doctors just give out pain medication like smarties! I have tried physio and attended a pain management clinic for a year with no improvement. I will learn as much as I can about TMS as you suggest. Thank you for your time and help. I am just glad I found this forum and I am no longer alone with this. Victoria |

No wonder you have pain, working full time and getting your PhD. We sometimes feel invincible due to repression. You have placed great demands on yourself, the pain lets you know.
What is your PhD field?
You will be fine. You are fortunate to have discovered TMS. True healing can now begin.
Gather acorns of information until you have that ah ha moment,
When you finally stop trying to heal and paying attention, you will be suddenly healed.

My PhD focused on training evaluation in the police service. It took ten years to complete and funnily enough my back pain started around the time I enrolled although I never made the connection before. Doctors said it was a herniated disc originally but over the years the diagnosis was pinched nerve/compressed nerve/sciatica/disc degeneration/lumber disc inflammation amongst others! I had an epiphany moment when I came across TMS recently and suddenly it seemed to explain my pain! I am trying to keep a record of my pain as it seems to be moving around which is new to me. I look forward to learning more. Thanks Victoria
