Because of my ongoing back pain for so many years I was taking one 200mg ibuprofen long lasting every night for a few years. 2 years ago I suddenly had excruciating pain in my gut & ended up in hospital on a drip for 6 days because of severe intestinal bleeding. A colonoscopy revealed some nasty looking ulcers in my intestine. The doctor was convinced that it was the ibuprofen & not Chrons or IBS. That was the last time I took any kind of anti inflammatories.
Fast forward to 2011 Nov & I get a slight sore throat. I took one or two doses of the medicine the doc prescribed as I was going to Japan in a couple of days. The throat cleared but I got tummy upset which lasted nearly a month. Another colonoscopoy revealed nothing. Then this Jan I got sore throat again with a fever. I self medicated with some flu pills & cough mixture. The cold cleared but 4 days later I got really bad tummy pain diarrhea which lasted almost 3 weeks & I ended up in hospital on a drip for 4 days coz I couldn't eat. CT san revealed nothing serious. Last week again I get a sore throat & so I went to the doc coz I didn't want to self medicate. He gave me some cough syrp as the throat was really bad. Now a week later I've got tummy pain & diarrhea again everytime I eat. When this happens my back really hurts too.
In the last 15 years I never got a cold & now 3 sore throats in 6 months.
Any thoughts on what's going on.
My doctor is very good. He says definitely not Chrohns nor IBS. Probably something systemic. Lymphglands in the stomach being inflammed & irritated .
Could this be TMS ?

Hi Mala!
Sorry you're suffering. I definitely think ibuprofen can irritate the stomach, from my experience (I no longer take them). It sounds like you had problems from that, but it also sounds like you've been scanned thoroughly and often, and there is nothing showing now. So maybe it's TMS just looking for something to latch onto? Perhaps the last time you were ill, you got stomach problems, so now every time you're ill, your stomach comes out in sympathy?!
Also, I have heard that cough syrups are useless, you are better off sucking lozenges to keep your throat moist until your body gets on and heals it. And as I said in another post, I am coming to realise how much every drug we take has an effect somewhere else - it's bound to - and puts a strain on our stomachs, livers, etc.
Coughs and colds are naturally self-limiting. I know it's difficult when we have to travel or work, but where we can, better to let our bodies do their (very expert!) job! Rest and good nutrition is all the help they need. And the penicillin of knowledge, of course!
Hope you feel better very soon, Mala.
All bests, Joy |

PS I don't know about you, but I always get ill from stress when I travel. My mother gets cystitis every time she travels, pure stress. And you went to Japan - did your diet change while you were there? That could easily upset your stomach. Even if you ate exactly as you do at home, your body clock was whacked out.
And you'll have been surrounded by other people's germs in the plane... Lots going on there!
Be well. Joy |

Same exact thing happened to a friend of mine. Ibuporphen until he ended up in the hospital...and now he has a severe reaction to most medications.
I think it's somewhat similar to getting sick after eating a certain food. You never want to,eat that food again, even if it was ok 100 times before you got ill.
Stress, TMS, anxiety, et al. can all weaken the immune system.

The pain is real! The cause...well, that's complicated. ;) |

Joy are you saying that this could be a conditioned response? I never quite thought of it like that. The thing is if I ignore the stomach pain & say eat normally the cramps & diarrhea worsen & I end up very weak.
