I just read Dr. Sarno’s Mindbody Prescription and am hopeful that the symptoms I have been experiencing are TMS. I’m not convinced yet but am hopeful. My personality fits the profile and there have been several physical symptoms in my past that could be explained by TMS according to the little I know at this point.
My recent saga began about a year ago I began having neurological symptoms, specifically an “internal tremor” in my left forearm. It was not initially visible, and I thought nothing of it for a couple of weeks. Then tingling all over began which soon concentrated in my hands and feet. That got my attention. I then had a tightening sensation accompanied by tremor and burning sensation in each hand/foot that began sequentially from left hand to right foot, to right hand and last left foot, until all extremities were involved. A general “buzzing” feeling in all extremities was constant with occasional numbness. These symptoms would remit, if not fully almost so, but would return again and new body parts added in. Seemed to move from extremities twords my core. Sciatic burning is now right hip and calf. Shoulder weakness, pain, and a sensation of irregular blood flow from the shoulders into my arms/hands- sometimes felt like too much other times not enough. I also tremor a lot. Sometimes all over, other times in an arm or leg, sometimes my face, even just my nose. Very weird. Bottom line is not much of me has been unaffected. Doctors (several) frankly looked at me puzzled and said they have no clue and have never seen the symptoms in the combination I described.
Personally several things have happened. My father died about four months before symptoms started. Also my older daughter almost died in my arms three years ago from a mysterious anaphylactic reaction after tonsillectomy. She then went on to have several more middle-of-the-night attacks which required my wife and I to speed her ten miles to the only emergency room in Chicago we trusted with her life. We both were frazzled as we spent months on edge wondering when it would happen again. Other run-of-the mill work, home, family and general life stresses mixed in seem to make me a candidate for TMS.
What complicates it for me was my father had neuropathy of unknown origin. He had polio as a child, drank, smoked, didn’t exercise, etc. He never had pain though. No hereditary tests were conducted so we’ll never know about that. Also I was exposed to a couple of chemicals over the past year that can cause nerve damage.
All medical tests have been normal. Blood pressure is perfect. So was MRI of brain and spine. EMG was fine. It was done early on and I was told that it is possible that it was done too soon to notice any damage at that point. A neurologist offered a nerve conduction test be redone if I wanted this past Jan., but I declined at that point. About the same time I was searching internet for what felt like circulation fluxuations in my extremities and shoulders, which led me to a neuro chatboard where a poster mentioned TMS as a possible cause of neuro symptoms via lack of blood flow. I soon after found this website and not long ago began the structured learning program too. I’m on my second therapist, one who is more psychodynamic. I am optimistic that what I have is TMS related but am not 100% there yet.
I’ve been reading the posts on the Forum and feel I have already learned a lot, and thought I’d share some of my story. I have been really interested in seeing the symptoms you all have had, what works for you all and all the work you all have put in. Although it seems that TMS takes whatever form will work for the individual involved, I’m curious about anyone who has had symptoms similar to what I describe? Also wondering if anyone else has had been able to FEEL the circulation fluxuation Dr. Sarno theorizes about? Sorry this was so long- Thanks for reading.

Jeez, Irish, that's a lot of stress, especially with your daughter. I'm sure you will find relief now that you know that your conditions are not serious. Welcome.

It certainly sounds like too much stress and anxiety.
We sometimes unconsciously get what we fear: you have your father's history forever locked in you brain.
FYI: Dr. Stracks at Northwestern Memorial is very much involved with mind-body problems and runs a program there, if you think you need something beyond the books.
Speaking of the books. An excellent source for "success" stories are the Amazon reviews for HBP.

Thanks Wavy and Back2-it. Yes, always knew anxiety was a problem for me but managed it until I hit the stress quota and all hell broke loose. Definitely a sign to do something new.
And thanks for suggesting Dr. Stracks. I figure I'll probably make an appointment with him sooner or later, depending on how things go.
