I am very upset. My league won't let me skate because they are listening to the team Dr. that I just saw Monday night instead of me. I was just telling the skater who reports injuries to the coaching committee that I was feeling better and wanted to skate, at least off to the side. They want me totally sitting on my butt. That makes me so mad because last night I skated in my house and was doing well. When I think of the pain in my left leg is when it acts up but when I don't think about it it's fine.
So, this morning I called a local Dr. that specializes in TMS. Yay! I won't get to see him until 3/23 and in the meantime the team Dr. wants me to take a MRI. I think its excessive and I am afraid I won't be able to afford it but it is the only way to get me cleared unless my new Dr. can clear me to skate.
The most frustrating thing about this is that it is difficult to tell people how emotional I am because I'm afraid it appears weak. And they take me less seriously. I wish that I could get a note that said something like "She's feeling sciatic pain but just give her time because it is her mind and she'll be fine." I'm just really sad because I know how difficult mind things are for me and I hope that I'll be able to talk myself through this. |

Sorry to hear about that, it's the price we pay to live in such litigious times. The league is covering it's butt at the expense of yours. Stay active to keep from TMS/stiffening up. You probably know what to do in that regard but swimming is good, I always say when all else fails return to the water.
Can you tell us who your TMS doc is since there are so few on the planet? Pester the doc for a cancellation, maybe you can get in sooner. Maybe you can get him or someone else to sign a waiver, that's probably all the league wants to absolve them of liability. It's legal BS like this that killed off most of the ice skating rinks--thank you lawyers!

Right on! It definitely drives me crazy when just to roller skate at a rink for fun you have to sign a legal waiver. Scaring people about things is just so horrible.
I've put off dealing with deep emotions and recent severe anxiety surrounding this new transition in my life, so it is good that now I'm forced to deal with it. I can only learn and evolve from this process. However, MRIs are expensive! But maybe it'll be good to show my own Dr.
Good news is that this Dr. is considered a family physician in my insurance plan so I only need to pay a co-pay. YAY!!!

As soon as I called and made the appointment my pain subsided. What does that tell ya? |

Note: Team Dr. wants to do 2 MRIs and 3 X-Rays.
Does that seem excessive or is it just me? I mean, I am feeling no pain when I sit and can jump up & down from sitting with no problem. The lateral side of my left thigh and left lower back are sore (not pinching) and just feel strained. When skating this is the leg that gets the most use due to the skating direction and I have been proud of it being my strongest body part. As I think about this pain radiates up my entire back and my neck hurts. Just starting to feel sore everywhere, and shortness of breath. |

I'm guessing it's like front, back and side views of your coccyx (tailbone), probably normal instructions to the imaging technician. |

Yeah, I think so too. Thanks! The Dr. agreed to just doing the X rays and put the 2 MRIs on hold while I do PT. Knowing I'm getting these X rays has really made me feel the pain there more, when it was virtually gone on Sunday.
Last night when I saw the PT it felt good, like a massage, but the pain is randomly appearing and disappearing depending on my stressful or calm thoughts. Mostly I am very very tired and feeling soreness all over. It's the process that has drained me, so it seems. Medical people can freak a person out. I mean, the PT was actually downplaying what the Dr. said. She was attributing my pain to overusage and just me getting used to the sport. Wish doctors could approach things with a bit more ease than jumping into thinking the worst first. |

hello rg,
TT is right. TMS just runs up the volume to get your attention. Its a distraction. You can break free of the fear.
So long as your previous docs have not identified serious illness, I suggest you get out and skate on your own, get the exercise you need outside of your group, and resume normal activity instead of thinking about what you cant do. You will see the TMS doc in a short while, and after that maybe your group will be satisfied with the docs DX. There isnt much more you can do until then, and going down the "lets get a bunch more imaging studies done" is probably just amping you up.
Engage yourself in positive activity.
Take care, -Stryder
