Reading the posts here I get the impression that many people are reluctant to take measures to alleviate the pain when it becomes unbearable. There's almost like sense of failure or they feel guilty taking a pill , doing a stretch, going for a massage whatever. I think that is awful & in my opinion not being able to help yourself causes more anxiety & tension & fear at a time when you are very vulnerable. I believe that you should do whatever you need to feel comfortable. When you are relaxed and comfortable you are able to think more clearly.
As long as you know these are temporary measures and the real cure lies in understanding why you are having the pain & gaining the necessary knowledge to change the way you think I would in fact encourage it. Have a hot bath with Epsom salts, use a hot water bottle if you need one. don't beat yourself up about it.
The body gets so used to being in pain all the time that it forgets how to switch off. Basically the body is very good at recovering. However when you have been in pain a long time & you are prone to tms , the muscles tense up. This keeps you in a state of fear & anxiety which perpetuate the symptoms even more. More pain means more fear & anxiety and so it goes on. By making yourself comfortable you are allowing the body to relax & begin it's recovery . When you are less uncomfortable your mind is more at ease and more receptive to doing the psychological work. Just as we believe the mind affects the body so must we also believe that the body affects the mind. They are intertwined & inseperable.
