A friend of mine went through aversion therapy to give up smoking. I was amazed at this since he is a hard person and does not seem the physiological type. Whenever he had the urge to smoke he flicked a rubber band on his wrist to give him a slight pain. This was in the eighties and he no longer smokes to this day. Could there be a place for this in TMS patients? It could be utilized in this way. You ping the band for the re-enforcement of mental thoughts like: “My pain can’t hurt me” or “Pain, I know what you are up to, and I have control”. By the way I use aggressive expletives that can’t be mentioned here, and feel better for it. Opinions both for and against would be most appreciated.
Monte Hueftle has an article on this rubberband idea somewhere in his website. I can't give you the actual one, I can recall finding it and reading it and he even has a special band available for purchase, with explicit instructions of how to use it etc., so it must work...worth trying anyway.
