This might seem like a stupid question, but sometimes stupid questions lead to insight.
On the one hand you have a TMS case such as Howard Stern's (as described in Ms. America). His pain went away in one swoop.
On the other hand in a case such as mine, I seem to be getting gradually better, but have yet to have one magic moment of epiphany which has caused my symptoms to go completely away for good. Right now I have a desire for a moment of epiphany not because I'm experiencing a lot of pain (my symptoms tend to be pretty mild these days), but rather because I want to feel as if I've struck a really good blow against TMS and because I want to get over all physical limitations. I don't know. Perhaps one of these days they will mild down completely.
IS IT POSSIBLE FOR PARTIAL UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPTANCE OF TMS THEORY TO BRING RELIEF? For example, I'm sitting in my chair in a way now that I wouldn't have done 4 weeks ago, yet my symptoms haven't gone completely away. Regarding understanding, if somebody suggested something such as a orthapedic mattress to me I would immediately think that their suggestion is ridiculous. On the other hand, right now I can tell myself that I'm 99.99999% certain that the cause of the symptoms aren't physical, but I don't feel like it would be honest to say 100%.

Again you are trying to quantify things that are just not quantifiable.
First of all, I guarantee you that even Howard Stern gets psychogenic symptoms from time to time. As much as he doesn't like to admit it, he is human like the rest of us
You should be very pleased with gradual progress. The process takes time. I would bet that the vast minority of TMS patients get rid of their pain "in one swoop." TMS is unconscious, and nothing we can do on a conscious level can make it go away. We have to hammer away at it.
Everybody is wired differently. Everybody has different life experiences that have contributed to TMS. There is no magic bullet. The steps to recovery are spelled out very clearly in Dr. Sarno's book. Give yourself over to the diagnosis, even if you don't believe it 100%.

Thank you Dave. I'll just keep working at it and let it get better in whatever way it does. |
