Has anyone here experienced their pain in many places at once? I've had pain in my head, neck, upper back, and low back (with referred pain down the right buttock and leg) for over a year now. It used to be just the low back and leg for years, but now it's everything. I've never been in so much pain. Can this all be TMS?

Yes. Also, your pain could be moving around due to symptom imperative (exchange of one pain for another). When the pain switches location, your brain is OCD-ing (obsessive compulsive disorder) about the previous location, and you relive the pain even though TMS has moved on. Its like playing the movie again, and again, and again. Do some google searches on "mindfulness".

Which TMS books have your read so far?

I've read all of Sarno's books and a lot of articles, print and Net. My big pain has been that lower back with the referred pain down the right buttock and leg. That's been going on since '98. How can I stop it?

Kinda blows the distraction theory away, doesn't it? Why do you need more than one symptom if it's just a distraction? Johnny, your body is in a general state of upset due to heightened levels of stress hormones, and the antidote for it is simple, but difficult. You have to rest, exercise and live your life in a way that doesn't add to the toxic mess your body is currently. That means you may need to take a more passive stance toward your life situations until you get to feeling better. The most drastic change you might want to take on immediately is to stop reacting emotionally to your symptoms, which is the most difficult part if you think about your pain all day and google proposed solutions or maladies or treatments.

You just have to believe that all this will go away if you let it. You can't make it. You have to let go of it, and trust that your body knows perfectly well how to function without being watched over like a chuck roast in a crock pot. Given time and correct thought and determined effort each day to do your activities of life, you will recover.

I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.

Hi JohnnyC9,

The biggest hurdle I had to overcome when I was in your exact same situation was the "schedule". Meaning, I had a deadline/timeframe for when I had to be healed. I found out it doesnt work that way. It took me quite a while to think differently since the schedule was actulaly stopping me from understanding the mindbody treatment process. A agree with Hillbilly's quote above and his observation that when one gets all amped up at this TMS pain the ... then its hard focus on the work ahead.

Have you been to see a TMS doc? Here is a link from the wiki... http://www.tmswiki.org/ppd/Find_a_TMS_Doctor_or_Therapist

You will get there as all before you have. Stay the course.

Take care, -Stryder

Many places at once? Yes, definitely! All the time. I agree with Hillbilly that fear and stress, which arouse the body in so many ways is the main culprit.

One obvious sign of psychosomatic symptoms is when they are illogical. Here's an example. I've got a marathon scheduled for this weekend, so I've been tapering, taking it easy for the past week. So, why are foot symptoms worsening that had been better when I was doing a lot of miles? Not only with this example, but with so many others, I very often feel much better after challenging the fearful symptom (the catastrophe, which usually never occurs). Of course, if I hadn't experienced this truth many times in the past I wouldn't know it and probably be afraid to do anything.

Another sign of psychosomatic symptoms is when they come and go, over and over, or even switch to the opposite limb. I've experienced this with an arm for over a year.

Sarno takes about heat improving symptoms. I agree. The hotter the better. I love scorcing saunas or steam baths, and I always feel much better afterwards. The same (heat) pricipal also applies to vigorous exercise. What do these two activities have in common? They relax you! That alone seems to be pretty good evidence that stress is behind the symptoms.
