Hey all,
I haven't posted in awhile, but thought I would let you know I have an appointment with Dr. Schecter on Monday February 25. My biggest fear is that he will tell me I don't have TMS because if I don't, then I feel as though I have nowhere else to turn.
We are making a little trip out of it. I have never been to LA, and am looking forward to some warm weather. Wish me luck.

Hi Sara. I can relate to your fear about the TMS diagnosis not being made. We have no TMS doctors in New Zealand that I know of. I have been putting entries in for a competition to win a trip to the US so I can see a TMS doctor (if they'd accept me as a patient) but I know that if I won I would freak out for exactly the same reason as you. In another thread you wrote:
quote: The pain is better now than it was, but my doctors are a bit perplexed. They are now saying I am hypermobile. They claim my ligaments are so lax that I can't keep my pelvis in place and am therefore haviing pain.
and I am keen to hear what Schecter says because one suggestion my doctor has made about the reason for my multiple tendonitis is excess laxity.
Best of luck and let us know how you go. Also enjoy your holiday!

Kat,
Thank you for the well wishes. I will say that at one point I really believed ligament laxity was my problem, but I have had four rounds of prolotherapy and it has done nothing! I also remember reading in HBP page 2 he writes, "It has been assumed that neck, shoulder, back and buttock pain is due to injury or disease of the spine and associated structures or incompetence of muscles and ligaments surrounding these structures--without scientific validation of these diagnostic concepts." I have underlined that sentence in my book and read it frequently.
I should also note I sent an email to Dr. Sopher and he doesn't believe hypermobility causes pain. So with that being said, I am hopeful but not fully convinced that I have TMS.
I will definitely let you know what he says. I think I will bring a tape recorder to the appointment as I have a tendency to question my own memory. When I got pregnant I had to look at the pregnancy test over and over to really believe it. It is weird, it seems a little obsessive, like I can't believe or trust my own memory.
Anyway thanks for the thoughts.

Kat,
I am sorry, I forgot to mention that I hope you win a ticket here. When will you find out?

Sara, (my daughter's name - great name!!)
I am so glad you are going to see Dr. Schechter. He is a wonderful doctor. I saw him during this past summer and I was so afraid he was going to tell me I didn't have TMS and I'd be starting over at square one. But, he didn't. He completely confirmed that my dizziness is my current manifestation of TMS and he made me feel so much better. I only saw him a few times but I really liked him. I also saw the TMS psychologist he recommended, Don Dubin.
Good luck to you. Hope you like L.A. as much as I do (I live north about 45 minutes from his office in Beverly Hills). I just know your appointment will be great.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know how much Sarno charges and if he accepts any form of insurance? I am almost certain I have TMS and have even been told by my therapist, one doctor (actually, he said "somatization," but we all know what that really is), and a meta-intuitive (she's absolutely incredible), that my symptoms are emotionally based. But the problem is, being a college student, I don't have a couple hundred dollars to shell out; plus, my parents have probably invested close to ten-thousand dollars over the past 5 years in my health so I doubt they will pay at this point. Thanks.

Seth,
I don't know if Sarno does but I know Dr. Schechter does. My three visits cost me $20 each, my co-pay, plus what I spent on the CD set and booklet. All you can do is ask, right? If not, maybe they'll work out a payment plan for you.
Good luck!

Sara , I read your posts and if that is not tms I will eat my hat. After what you went through with the pregnancy and associated events,Your unconscious brain needs that distraction(located in a very obvious spot)to keep you occupied. That was too much to deal with,so your brain is not going to give up that stratergy, because it works too well.Just think of how clever your brain is to keep all that resentment under cover.Getting a diagnosis by a tms Doctor will be a great help to your self confidence, because it will go against everything traditional medicine tells you.I think it will be a home run for you. good Luck, get well soon! Thanks Sara,
The prize is drawn at the end of April I think. It's a long way away so I imagine there'll be lots of entries received by then. Still, I eat a lot of chocolate (you have to send in choc bar wrappers) and so you never know!

Seth, I saw Sarno in Sept. 2003. His fee was $1,000. This includes his examination, the lectures and any follow up visits.
He doen not accept any insurance. He will give you 2 bills for $500 each. If you have insurance that allows you to choose your own doctor, they can be submitted and you'll be reimbursed. I got back $800.
Hope this helps.

Oiy, $1000 is way too much, but I will call him anyway and see if I can work something out, I also (hopefully) will have Sopher as a backup. But I'm trying to build up the much needed confidence that I can beat this sucker--like many on this board have, I'm sure--without the help of an official TMS doc. Besides, I did get an emotional diagnosis from my psych and one of his colleagues; you would think that would suffice, but in the oh so obsessive world that is Seth's head... (<--- I'm not making light of the matter, just trying to stay positive).
Also, I did just begin reading, Facing the Fire as per the advice of many on this board; I'm hoping it will help. Be well everyone! Heads up!

Seth, Sarno believes that most people can be helped by reading his book(s). If the money is an issue, it will only add to your stress, wheich then adds to the pain. The main reason that he doesn't see a lot of patients is because he doesn't think it's necessary. This is the most noble and honest doctor on the planet. I saw him because I had surgery and was virtually crippled. I'd been told that I needed to start using a wheelchair. From what you've posted, it doesn't sound like you need to see him. Just an opinion.

Polly,
That makes me feel so much better! Sometimes I just need someone to slap a little reality into me. I'm going to do my TMS work and reflect on what you wrote. Thanks again!
