Hey all,
I have not posted for a while now as I have been pretty much pain free for the last 3 months - after 12 years of excruciatin pain in my sciatica. This last week, my very close friend's father died and my office moved to a new location - a very, very stressful week - while dealing with blizzard conditions (I live just outside New York city). Yesterday, out of the blue, the extreme pain came back in the outside of my hip and down my leg - I forgot how painful it is. It was hard to walk this morning. This obviously must be connected to the difficult conditions I have been under this last week - but it totally took me by surprise - or shock. Also, I have been exercising much more than normal and wonder if I still have some lingering fear connected to this (harming myself etc. ) Anyway, I took out the Healing back pain book and read it this morning - forcing myself to cycle on my stationary bike for 30 minutes. I can walk now but the pain is still fairly bad. Any tips as to how to get the mind back on track? I already yelled at it this morning for about 15 minutes. This condition is extraordinary.

Once you get an acute attack, you cannot expect the pain to go away quickly. All you can do is keep focusing on psychological issues and ignore the pain as best you can. Accept that it will take a few days to recover.

You've recovered once before, you can do it again. No problem

Suz,

Sorry about your flare-up. That's a lot of TMS creating stess to deal with. Have some patience. Last year I got a shoulder/neck TMS attack. It was uncomfortble, but I played through and it went away 100% in exactly a week. It was my TMS, pain-movement, epiphany. It made me more of a true believer in the mindbody connection.

Last November, I got a real bad cold/flu/TMS, and stayed in bed for a week. The timing was good, I had nothing important I had to do. In fact, it got me out of a tennis clinic trip to Hawaii, I did not want to go on. I luxuritated in bed for a week. Deepak Choopra says that illness is the Western form of meditation. Maybe after your obligations are properly wrapped-up you can treat yourself to some R & R.

About a week ago my I was joking around with my lady friend about eating chocolate and gettimg zits. She's has a beautiful complexion and is always washing her face and getting facials. I was trying to ply her with chocolate to give her a zit. She's 50 and I'm 56. I kidingly wonderd if we could get TMS induced zits. Guess what?--one week later, I started getting a zit. I have no doubt it was induced by the conversation a week ago. Ths gremlin is a tricky fellow. If you can view TMS as a game, that you play with your unconscious, it can even be quite amusing.

Tennis Tom,
You have just brought up an issue that really causes me a lot of anxiety. My skin has been awful - I do a blood type diet and find that that controls it breaking out a lot - although I think the whole thing might be TMS - I am convinced that my skin is going to break out so it does. - I have been so upset about it as it really affects my confidence level. At 34 years old, I didn't expect to be dealing with this. I wonder how one applies the TMS theory to one's skin. Does anyone else have this?
On another note, thank you to you and everyone for your incredible encouragement. It may take a little bit of time for it to go away as the pain was really bad this morning. I will keep on at it. It will definitely go - and also it will probably reinforce the TMS condition for me
