Hey guys, Quick story. Dual level herniations l4/5 l5/s1 in 2006. I was 19 at the time Insanely bad sciatica. All symptoms went away with in a couple months. Resumed serious athletic load: Kung fu, gym, 5 mile runs, etc. Slight discomfort remained, but has progressively turned into quite serious constant pain. Simultaneously sharp and dull at all times, I had to discontinue all exercise about a year ago. Recent MRI's showed significant degeneration in the l5/s1 with a 9mm bulge and possible rupture.

Other things: horrible tinnitus, knees, hands, neck, wrist are terrible as well, ****ty self imagine, deep sadness as a result of **** tons of anger and other repressed items.

So here is the thing. I went and saw a doctor (Bruce E.) about two years ago with these concerns asking for something to connect all the dots. No tenderness anywhere. He didn't really say anything, just put me on Cymbalta (for the pain and justifiable depression). Anyways, stopped seeing this guy after two visits. I just checked the list of TMS doctors on the list here to find one and turns out that Bruce is on the list.

Now, he made no mention of TMS at the time of my visit. Of course I don't know if he was certified at the time I saw him, but regardless its a bit disconcerting for me. I've read through one of Sarno's books (healing back pain) and the the whole thing makes sense to me except for two things. 1) I have no tenderness on my body (that I know of) and 2) I worked out with complete disregard of any notion of re-injury, fear, etc. I systematically had to stop all activity as each thing became way to painful for me to push through or as my symptoms rendered me unable to proceed (Quite martial arts because of the grinding in my knees). The last thing I did was a five mile run a bunch of months ago and that put me in some serious discomfort for a few days, as well as through out the run. No running through or second day run.

My problem with the TMS diagnosis is that is seems to undermine a disc problem (one I clearly have) in argument that its all in my head. I didn't stop doing things from worry, I stopped because I can't physically do it anymore. I even have to be careful about tweaking my hip with out firing a jolt of pain up my spine. Also, I been seeing a psychotherapist for about two years now and its hasn't helped with anything. Head and otherwise. What do you guys think.

Also, a fun side fact. I haven't smoked pot in a while because it causes me completely immobilizing pain through my whole body, like electricity is being surged through my nerves. Pretty ****ed up right?

Get a second opinion, Dr. Parvez Fatteh is just over the hill from Dr. E. I think over in Sunnyvale. He's on the list of TMS practitioners.

Is your psychotherapist schooled in TMS? If not, then find one who is. Dr. E may have a TMS therapist he refers to or Dr. Fatteh may.

Thanks for the tip on the Cymbalta, next time my depression gets bad I'll give it a go. What dosage did Dr. E put you on?

I quit smoking pot because it gave me cosmic paranoia. It's amazing how it's being sold as "medicine" now; the down-fall of Western civilization is just around the corner.

You won't feel tenderness without pressing the muscles that are chronically contracted. They won't necessarily be around the site of your pain either. For example, a tense muscle in your shoulder can compress your brachial plexus which can refer pain all the way to your finger tips and constrict circulation too.
