Just wanted to share a milestone/breakthrough in my TMS recovery. I started this journey in mid-December of 2010 and it took me the this entire time to get to this level of understanding, which pretty much hit me yesterday.

At first I thought Sarno was saying that you had to identify each and every feeling to stop the pain. That SO did not work. And oddly enough I have found that since I have learned about TMS, I have not been able to make pain go away with any of my old remedies; in fact, it just got worse when I tried so I stopped trying. I don't do pain meds so all I could do was wait out the pain with the faith that it would eventually pass, which it always does (it did even before I knew about TMS but then it came back).

Well lately the only pain I have is a dull ache and I can't even seem to psych myself into having pain! I think this is occurring because it has taken me this long to fully accept that I have TMS. Once the acceptance came, the pain became homeless.

Eckhart Tolle's writings and practicing yoga are helping me but I do not believe I necessarily need them to avoid pain. I need them more for a larger sense of peace and well-being. What really matters to me is I know that I have TMS and that it doesn't have to rule my existence. It's been very freeing to reach this level of acceptance!

take good care,
Sue

Sue, what a great discovery for you! Yes, acceptance can really lift a weight of our shoulders, literally too, and allow us to just 'be'. For some, just accepting you have TMS is enough to see much or all of the pain disappear. For others, there is more that's needed and that's o.k. I'm learning to not be so impatient for results, but to be accepting as you have stated and at peace with the process. In the meantime, I am learning a TON about myself and I love it! :)

thank you for sharing your thoughts on this!

I'm battling the total acceptance thing.

It's extremely hard to do when you have the "proof" in the form of an MRI and the symptoms directly correspond. That and the symptoms have gradually lessened over the last 18 months. My symptoms never move around, either.

I'm going to an initial consult for psychotherapy to see if it can provide some insights. I've improved. I jog again, I have done things around the house, yet the horrible vise like feeling around my chest persists and the heaviness of my side does as well. My back muscles are stiff and it's painful to raise my right arm shoulder height and higher. I try to think psychological when this happens, but then slip into the "what-if's" of it all.

I go around and around with accepting TMS, but am frustrated by not being 100 percent. That, and I was scared shipless by doctors telling me I was one fall away from being a paraplegic and looking at me like I was a Martian because mid back problems are so rare.

Even if there was an injury (I tell myself) the body heals, the pain goes away. Right? Something about my thinking is keeping the pain real. I wish I knew what.

Your desire to be "100%" is a major characteristic of the TMS prone personality--PERFECTIONISM. No one is 100% except in Hollywood.

God, Tom, bingo!

I never considered myself a perfectionist. A reforming "goodist" yes.
It's not like I haven't shown improvements since going the Sarno route.
I'm reluctant to do psychotherapy, because most therapists do not listen. This one was recommended by a TMS doc and specializes in mind body, but can they really provide any insights?

I get these down moods.

Thanks.

I would hope so, TMS practitioners are few and far between. You are very fortunate to have found a doctor and a recommended therapist. Hoping it works out well for you and you can give a referral for others.

The last therapist I went to tapped on my knees and told me I was strong and would get through it. That therapist was not trained in mind body though and never delved into my background.

I feel like I'm letting the TMS doc down by doubting and backsliding. I should be able to accept TMS but I don't fit neatly into the TMS model. No RSI for me or lumbar disc problems to make it simple.

I guess I will press ahead.
