Lately I've read that chronic pain is specific to Western Society and that some societies have no word or phrase for ongoing pain.

It's an interesting conjecture.

I've traveled to many countries, but I never asked those I was visiting what their pain registered on a scale of 1 to 10.

The subject is really interlaced with the flaming topic on here about what to call TMS.

Any thoughts on this? Anybody heard the same over the years?

I'd be astonished if that were the case.

But then I've been astonished before..

I should modify what I say in that there are apparently some places in the world where chronic pain is not an issue to do the fact that the society is more supportive and healing and inclusive and that many people in those societies are supposedly not given to depression and anxiety and repression of emotions. At least not the way we understand depression and anxiety and emotional repression.

Don't know if it's true, but I came across that idea several times, most recently in an article by some MD in the US who is working the mind-body idea and wrote a book. Can't find it now.

funny, Dr. Brady talks about how he did, or does some medical work in some third world country and it amuses him that in this country (well usa) where we are full of paper and pencil pushers that back pain is 2nd only to respiratory problems at the genral practitioner's office.

In contrast, in the other country where women walk around with kids strapped to their backs all day and jugs of whatever on their heads, and the men farm all day that out of the 1000 cases he treated (I think, been awhile since I read it) there was only one case of back pain, and that was because a man's ox fell on top of him.
