Hello All - I am new to this board and could use some advice. A little history - 2 years ago this January while I was making the bed felt like someone literally stabbed me in the back. I was bent over and couldn't straighten up - the pain took my breath away. I couldn't even call to my husband for help (he was in the next room). He came in and found me pale, sweating, and clutching the side of the mattress - he thought I was having a heart attack or something terrible like that. This was the first time I'd EVER experienced any sort of back pain (I'm 44 yrs. old - was 42 then). I have always been fit (in fact was dressed for the gym on that fateful day) and was, thankfully, never in a car accident or anything like that. My doctor prescribed the usual - pain killers, muscle relaxers, etc. MRI's show small herniation at L4-5 and some bulging at L3-4, some degeneration, etc. Nothing spectacular in other words. I tried the usual chiropractor, acupuncture, spinal decompression with a machine called the DRX-9000, had 2 epidurals. Needless to say, am still in pain. Never as bad as that first week, but still use pain killers to get through the day - about 8 per day. I am taking oxycontin (15 mg) without the aspirin (if I need to, I take Advil or Motrin separately. Dr. Sarno said to try to slowly "wean" off. I was just wondering if anyone else was battling with the use of pain killers while trying to come to terms with TMS and any advice about how to get through it all. Would really appreciate any insight. Thanks so much.

Hi Diane,
welcome! Perhaps you could start by having a look at your level of fear around the pain? If you believe it to be emotional then you would understand that there is nothing wrong with your back and the pain is just annoying and nothing else. It's still going to hurt, but it's just muscle pain and you won't be afraid of it.

Hope this helps

Nah we're not nice. We're all an anxious and compulsive lot that act nice cause we want to be liked :-) Just kiddin

You'll need to start at the basics....you can't really 'try' to 'learn' it's emotional. You might have to prove it to yourself. Find ways to discredit the current belief in order to form a new one.

Thanks Darko - got a great laugh from that one - SO TRUE!

You're right about doing things to "discredit" my current belief, e.g. - if I work out at the gym, my spine won't fall off! Have a long way to go, but spirits are definitely improving.

Hi Diane,

Have you read Pandamonium's story? She "put out her back" pushing a sofa:
