Here's the question that keeps circling around in my mind.
My pain/discomfort is mainly (now) in my chest and upper abdomen. It's a burning, aching, pulling feeling. It is constant when I'm sitting and standing and walking.
I had three things happen all at once. One is a mid-back disc protrusion. The second is gallbladder surgery last year. The gallbladder was the size of a summer squash, literally. It's a long story, but I first noticed it in May 2007, and it was not symptomatic and it wasn't recognized as an over sized gallbladder. Emergency surgery in March 2009 took it out.
I may have scar tissue problems, I don't know. In addition, I may have a hernia that developed as a result of the surgery, as my abdominal achiness and burning disappeared after the surgery but came back a few months later.
My back knot has smoothed out, which was the subject of an earlier post, but I'm honestly running up against a roadblock because I don't know if I have a hernia or scar tissue or both or whether my brain can be playing to those weak areas.
I also obsess on the areas, am constantly tensing them, and am having trouble letting go and just going with the pain and discomfort. I've increased my activity level in the last couple of weeks some, because of Sarno's advice.
Anybody have multiple pain possibilities and what did you do to eliminate the questions. I am wondering if at least knowing that it is scar tissue or a hernia or both would ease my anxiety and help me/ |

Jaya,
Thanks for answering. I have OCD when it comes to the body and illness. I am feeling better about my back. Just got done driving five hours and now "jumps" or "mini spasms" or anything, and the back muscles seem as smooth on one side as the other -- though I'm going to now stop check this. (OCD be damned to you know where. What a curse!).
I'm going to really work the thoughts around my side. I do want to get back into shape physically, and this is ok to do so long as its exercise that is not supposed to "take away" the pain, but I'm a mess: 40 pounds heavier than I should be, at least, and completely out of shape. |

OCD is TMS, that's what Dr. Sarno helped Howard Stern with. Here's a review from Amazon by Howard:
"My life before Dr. Sarno was filled with excruciating back and shoulder pain. For twenty years I also suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder and thought my back pain was due to my height or some sort of spine problem and that my OCD was a chemical imbalance and only treatable with medication. But all my thoughts were wrong. Imagine the miracle in my life when in a matter of weeks my back pain disappeared. Imagine my shock when I applied Dr. Sarno's principles and never suffered a single symptom again. Quite simply - I owe Dr. Sarno a lot." - Howard Stern

Thanks jaya and Tennis Tom.
I am working on the OCD. The only place it effects me is my thoughts on health.
That my back has seemed to smooth out gives me reason to believe the rest is TMS/MBS. My brain has to learn this, and it's a slow learner. |

my ocd used to be checking locks, windows, fear of fire, counting etc. (classic ocd) i went to counseling and literally cured that part of it....however my ocd dynamics have shifted to ocd on my own body,,, id rather be checking locks, that caused no pain just time consuming. every little pain in my body i think immediately is crohns disease/ironically its my biggest fear- even bigger than cancer! all my "symptoms" seem to point to crohns-docs say otherwise. that where my hypochondrasis comes in, great fun! its a vicious carousel thats hard to get off.quote: Originally posted by Back2-It

uveitis, weird ongoing bowel issues, twitching muscles, fatigue, head ache, muscle pain, changes in stool color, weight loss/gain depite eating superbly plus my mother had autoimmune disease(lupus) doctors are not interested in doing anything internal. ie perfect bloodwork everytime except low vit d, the basically brush me off and tell me to get my head checked-nice huh? isurance wont cover colonoscopy they deemed it not medically necessary because i dont have blood in my stool or fever! crohns to me is just a gut feeling, no pun intendedquote: Originally posted by tennis tom

Modern medicine is excellent at dx'ing structural problems. If the "docs" say otherwise, why are you hanging onto the belief you have Crohns? Have you had an intestinal biopsy to dx for Crohn's?

Anxiety plays a big role in many body symptoms. Want to see a list? Want to see how many symptoms match? I did this exercise and found many. I was shocked and relieved all at once. I gradually eliminated them when some of my nervous system calmed. Check out the list at http://www.anxietycentre.com.
Some did not go away, because of the effects of TMS and the reaction it has had with some real medical issues -- none of them life threatening now. I am working on calming my entire nervous system, but these other symptoms, which produced real pain, will take some time to dissipate. |
