i saw a neurologist who looked at my MRI and did an exam. he said my C7 disk is herniated and that this is causing my reflexes to be diminished on the right side, where there is a bulging disk. he said this is likely not going to get better and may in fact get worse as i get older. he also said i should speak to a neurosurgeon.
could this be TMS even if the structural abnormality is shown in the MRI and the reflex is diminished? |

I urge you to read Dr. Sarno's book which discusses how many findings on MRI are benign and not the cause of symptoms. |

I had 2 herniated discs in my neck, c4,c5, and had an injection of cortisone in them , and was supposed to have surgery. I heard that neck surgeries can have poor outcomes, and read a book "Alternatives to Neck and Back Surgery" written by a surgeon. The author mentioned that he referred all his patients to Dr.Sarno before he would perform neck or back operations. I read Healing Back Pain, and felt better very quickly. I was having numbness, weakness, pain in the shoulder and neck, and these all went away. I was in my forties at the time of my so-called "diagnosis", I am 52 now, I still run and work out and go to yoga. I also had other excuses for pain, ie: scoliosis, ruptured discs in lower back. My x rays look strange, but these things don't cause pain, they are just there, so what, big deal. |

You were just dosed with a "nocebo." Don't fall for it. When I was seeing a chiro he said he was surprised I could walk, given the severity of my L4/L5 herniation. I got sick of the "babying the back" routine and took up Iyengar yoga, which is very strenuous, and worked on my avoidance behaviors. Now I feel great and don't worry about my back. I've concluded my back pain was basically an extended anxiety attack. Maybe that approach could help you, too. Good luck, and chin up. |

deerock...
I was hit with a T-7/8 protruding disc. I have the pictures to prove it,too. Looks horrible. One pissy little disc and my life is supposed to be ruined? Mid back is like the "third rail". Nobody wants to touch it. One wrong move and you can become paralyzed and lose your bladder and bowel function and the only way to save you is immediate surgery. The more I understood about it the more scared (and diminished in physical ability) I became. I conditioned myself to pain and weakness. I'm still working to undo this process. It takes time.
From what I understand, Dr. Sarno advises that actual weakness and changes in reflex happen with TMS. Yes, to your question: your structural abnormality could be TMS, because the brain can aim for the weak physical spots.
I'll tell you another thing: most doctors, when it comes to the back, are guessing. There are patients with multiple disc problems and worse who have no pain. (I know, I used to say "lucky them").
Since I started reading Sarno and ingesting it into my being I am finding surprising moments of little or no pain. I've actually seen/felt my right paraspinal muscle unknot. I get so surprised in these moments that I race right back to thinking about the problem and that I couldn't be "almost" feeling normal. I'm working on racing forward with thoughts and now backward.
The neuologist I saw immediately referred me to a neurosurgeon. i didn't see the one recommended, but the one I did see was honest: he said that operating might not relieve my pain.
