Im suddenly and very abruptly having another attack in my legs and i dont know where its from or what to do.
Ive been doing the TMS program for about 2 and 1/2 weeks now; initially started b/c of nearly ten years of chronic pain but more recently, due to CFS, leg pain and weakness (which put me in the ER and prevented me from walking for nearly a week).
Ive been diligent with the reading and journaling and have gotten rid of 60-70% of my symptoms in the last two weeks. Yesterday., i was perusing the boards and reading all sorts of uplifting and positive posts. Then, i went to bed last night and the pins and needels started in my right leg. It quickly "spread" to my left leg and ultimately covered both feet, ankles, shins and calves. The pain is indescribable. I then started having pins and needles in my hands, one wrist and even a few in my face. Im trying to just not give it any attention and just accept that its TMS but this pain is just too severe.
I did my best to talk to my brain, journal, and do what I normally do, but i just couldnt beat it. This not only kept me up all night but really worried me. Its now the next day and the pain is still there, although it did subside for a period of time last night when i slept.
Should I be expecting this type of major setback after so much success?
I am downright nervous now as i feel like im losing a grip on this thing...
Has anyone else experienced this type of pins and needles pain and weakess in their legs? |

Tom-
Thanks for your comments. I am currently seeing Dr Ira Rashbaum at NYU (he worked with Sarno for 10+ years).
I just feel like ive hit a roadblock with these swollen parotid glands. The doubts that I have there are fueling the recurrence of all the other pain(s).
There doesnt seem to be anyone in this forum or, any info anywhere that suggests parotid swelling is a tms equiv.
Further, this leg pain is really challenging me... |

That's great. One think I've been impressed with with Dr. Sarno, and I assume Dr. Rashbaum hopefully does the same, is to take calls from their patients and dx TMS or not TMS. Once the Good Doctor takes you on as a patient, you are a patient for life.
Give him a call, he is certainly in infinitely better position to dx you then anyone here.
As far as your glands, there is a tendancy by TMS'ers to want to literally see chapter and verse on "their" symptom. I'm the same way, I never feel Dr. Sarno discusses enough on my physical issues, hip arthritis. If he devotes a paragraph, then we want a chapter, then a book and after that we would want an trilogy on our particular physio-symptom.
My opinion is that TMS symptoms can appear anywhere in the body there is blood-flow. The subconscious can then slightly restrict it, causing harmless but excrusciateing pain. If the physical symptoms can no longer serve this distraction purpose, the gremlin will move on to affective symptoms such as auto-immune, depression, etc.
Because of your doubt, the gremlin is doing it's job to distract you from the emotional issues. This is a defense mechanism--a protective device--from the perceived, more acute emotional pain, you would feel if you confronted them head on, a la the the life stressing events listed on the Holemes-Rahe list I've linked to below.
Perhaps, be thankful for the socially acceptable physical pain distracting/protecting you from emotional issues.
But as always with symptoms, have them checked out to make sure nothing serious is going on. Leave a message with Dr. Rashbaum's office now requesting to talk to him about your latest physical symptoms and let us know what he says.
In the meantime go down the Holmes-Rahe list and ID the stressful events that are going on now in your life to balance things out a little away from the body stuff.
Good Luck

Thanks Tom; ive felt exactly that way where i wish he would write more about parotid swelling.
To be honest with you that has taken a back seat to this new round of leg pain. I slept for one hour last night because amazingly, every time i got into bed my leg felt like it was on fire and, was being poked by hundred of little pins. I just could not sleep in this condition. However, when i am out of bed, it seems to subside and/or, i am focused on it less and therefore it dissapears (which im guessing is the key here). Its just very difficult to not think about while in bed b/c there isnt much else to think about or occupy my attention with!
I have beaten this leg pain before (last week) but am unsure as to why its back with such a vengeance. No matter how much I write, talk to myself, etc. it just does not seem to go away.
BTW-one more thing: I have no idea what purpose this parotid swelling serves if it is indeed TMS. the glands arent painful and they dont serve as a very good distraction. Its more of a nuisance than anythingn else. Besides, what would be the purpose if the TMS is doing such a good job at really distracting me with other more "effective" pains? |
