Still appear to be having problems with a few triggers and conditioning issues....Please tell me that I am right that this situation that I am about to describe has no possible physiological basis for triggering sciatica....Here it is...I drive up to Wendy's to place an order at the order machine, pay at the first window and then pick up the order at the second window. All 3 stopping places are on a paved surface that tilts rather sharply to the right. So I am not seated exactly level for a few minutes while I perform this transaction....Seems very benign to me, but I often get sciatic pain in the left leg after I do it, and when I did it last night, I got excruciating pain and still have it this morning...I supposedly have 3 ruptured discs and have had many surgeries but am much, much better now after Sarno work - except for certain - what I consider to be - conditioning problems....Also, has anyone seen the new Charlotte, NC TMS doctor (on the TMS doctor list)? |

It is good that you are recognizing the power of conditioning.
If it were me, I would laugh at this occurrence, and consider it a confirmation of TMS.
Maybe the pain is more related to the fact that you feel guilty for eating Wendy's when you should be eating healthier ;) |

Thanks so much for giving me feedback, Dave. I was hoping you would comment. It is truly a comical situation and believe me I would never be able to share such an absurdity with anyone other than the folks on this forum or a TMS doctor. I thought about telling my wife why I am limping around today, but then I thought, she'll think I'm really nuts....I am, as many TMSers are, rather impatient and demanding of others and the world in general. I think that whenever I go to that Wendy's I get angry at "them" because of how awkward I feel going through the drive-through - besides the sharp, sloppy, lazy(?), customer unfriendly tilt to the pavement, you have to reach WAY up to pay the cashier - because the cashier window is so absurdly high (highest I have ever seen)...I suppose the design of this Wendy's just doesn't meet my perfectionistic standards....I think the first time the pain occurred (actually the first time I drove through) my brain turned on my convenient sciatica defense to distract me from how angry I was getting about the drive-through design that some lazy moron put together and royal me had to suffer through. After the pain happened that first time, now it appears to be a matter of expectation of pain - of conditioning. |

I think Dave nailed it.
Don't worry about the pain, just shrug or laugh it off. Also, allow yourself to feel whatever emotions you're experiencing at the same time. Don't worry, stress, or think too hard about the emotions. Just allow yourself to feel them, non-judgmentally. That’s my $0.02.

Also keep in mind that if you are really that angry at a fast food drive thru, then maybe that anger is just a smokescreen for some underlying emotions that your unconscious mind does not want you to feel.
Sometimes when I get really angry at stupid things, such as missing a traffic light that would cost me one minute on my drive home, I take a deep breath and ask myself, what is really bothering me that I'm not realizing? If I find a candidate, then I might get really angry at that instead. This works well if you are alone in the car and can scream to your heart's content and try to get it out into the open. |
