Without going into the same old, same old details I have been a TMS sufferer and was pretty much pain free for about 3 years. I have been suffering again for almost a year and at first didn't realize it was TMS. Went the traditional dr. route and had an MRI, since it had been years since my last one (showed nothing). My new MRI did reveal slight spindylothesis, osteoarthritis, spinal stinosis and really thought this time my pain was physical. After steroid injections, chiropractic adjustments, etc.. I read The Divided Mind and it clicked that it was another bout of TMS. I have lower back pain, mostly left side but sometimes right too. Also sciatic pain and buttox pain. Moves around as is typical with TMS sufferers. After reading Sarno my pain alleviated for a good month or so and I was feeling much better. Also, journaled every day and was very encouraged. My whole mood was much better and was even pain free at times!

However, the last few weeks I am almost back to square one. However one day it got a little worse and I freaked out. I started with all my fears, "what if I am always in pain, I'm going on vacation and will be miserable, etc." I am trying to "watch my thoughts as an outsider" and journal but am finding it so hard. I also do the whole thing with length of time it is lasing. OMG it's been x amount of time and I still feel this way. I realize I play a lot of head games with myself but am "stuck" in this rut. This board has been a real source of comfort for me and find I'm almost addicted to it when I'm in this state.

It's hard to relate to my friends and boyfriend about this issue. I feel very much alone at times. I do have a therapist that I've seen a couple times and am seeing her again in 2 weeks. However, I can't afford to see her all the time. Wondering if anyone has used meds. to get better? Last bout I used prozac and clonopin and it worked. Tried it again without success. Not sure what to do?? HELP!

If symptoms have returned, examine any recent changes in your life that might be causing you to repress emotion.

It is often the things that you don't realize that are contributors to TMS. For example, you might say to yourself, "I got a new boss at work, but he's pretty cool and everything is going great." But the "child inside" might not feel the same way.

Regarding meds, it's important to realize that medication does not make you "get better." Meds simply treat the symptoms, not the cause. As long as you accept the cause is psychological, and do your best to uncover those psychological issues, meds could be helpful to alleviate symptoms. For example, Dr. Sarno prescribes pain killers if necessary. However, it is important to accept this is not a "fix" but just something to make you more comfortable while you do the work to treat the true causes.

Dave, thanks for your insight. I totally agree with you regarding medication and know a cure only comes after getting to the psycological root. Working on it and have made progress!

My pain is less since learning my pain is TMS and NOT physical but I can't seem to get rid of it totally. I find myself obsessing all day on the physical as much as I try not to and then get anxious, which makes the pain worse. It's a vicious cyle I'm thinking of taking an antidepressant and/or other meds totry and "break this cycle".

I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!
