Hello,
I wondered if anyone else feels that TMS also makes a person's immune system not function as well. When I read the way in which the brain works; it makes sense to me that 'toxic' thinking does impair the body's immune system.
This has been a point of frustration for me. I do 'all the right things' nutritionally (although I know people's opinion differ)... no junk food, pretty much no sugar, no packaged foods, whole grains, all organic, supplements, exercise... and yet colds come and go many times throughout the year. I was never like that until TMS kicked into high gear. I have put so much stock into nutrition and supplements I wonder if the root to this continual cycle of illness is actually rooted in TMS. I have no auto-immune diseases. I have no reason that I should get every cold that I encounter.
I appreciate all the posts. I log on and read when I can because all that you share is a great encouragement to me.
So far I have been freed from neck pain, Interstitial Cystitis and back pain. I am now working on nerve twitches, buttock pain, IBS, and primarily on the way I think!
Thank you!

Hi hopeacres, I think you are correct about emotions also affecting our immune system function. There are studies that connect emotional issues with autoimmune disorders.
One study that comes to mind is by James W Pennebaker, PhD. They assigned two groups of college students to journal for 20 minutes a day for four days. One group wrote about emotionally charged issues, stresses, memories. The other group wrote about non emotional topics such as a vacation or weather.
After the journaling assignment, both groups were tested and evaluated over a period of time. The group who had written about emotionally charged topics as compared to the other group, showed improved immune function, less health center visits, less infections (colds/flu), and reported less anxiety and depression.
Here's a link to an article in APA online referring to the study: http://www.psychologymatters.org/pennebaker.html
Having learned about and benefited from the TMS theory, These findings makes sense to me.
You can find other research on the tmswiki.org, research page: http://tmswiki.wetpaint.com/page/Research
Best, Peg

The brain can definitely impact the immune system. There's even a discipline which studies this: psychoneuroimmunology.
That being said, I think the #1 thing that everyone could do to reduce their illness frequency is take Vitamin D. The evidence is overwhelming: the majority of the western world is Vitamin D deficient now that we all spend the vast majority of our time indoors. I started taking 5000IU daily a year ago. I was getting colds every 2-3 months and I haven't been sick since. (Note: This is much more than the FDA's recommended daily intake. But the FDA is clueless.)

I sure appreciate both of these posts. Thank you so much. I am eager to look up the links.
I will also increase my vitamin D. That makes a lot of sense too. |
