I'm 37 and have been a follower of Sarno for about 6 years now. Have run the gamut with TMS equivalents throughout my whole life - see a post of mine from about 3.5 years ago here for the history: http://www.tmshelp.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1847. Although I forgot a few that I've suffered with including prostatitis, hay fever and probably others I'm forgetting.

I generally deal with my symptoms by ignoring them and they go away but I have a weird one this time. First let me preface by saying I am under incredible stress right now. Working full time, plus studying 4 hours per day 7 days per week since August for a major certification. Basically no down time and not getting a ton of sleep. Plus wife is pregnant with baby #4.

About 6 weeks ago I started experiencing standard allergy symptoms - not unusual for me. But one added thing is my upper lip generally feels a little swollen/tingly. Seems to get better and worse, but generally has been present most of the last 6 weeks. I haven't been recording its appearances but I think there were about 2-3 days where it didn't seem to be present at all last week. When it is present, I sometimes have the perception of speech problems. Saying things that begin with "th" or "p". Nobody has said anything to me about noticing it though but I catch myself pausing witha an "um" or other word before I say words like "three" or "point" so I can concentrate on saying them. Mentioned it to the wife and she said she hasn't noticed it. My perception of it comes and goes too - sometimes I'll be talking and thinking, "Wow, it's really bad now." And then other times I'll be thinking, "Wow, it's totally gone now."

Anyway, anyone else ever have a similar issue? Regardless, I think I'll make an appointment with my doctor to have it checked out but I sure could not use a distraction from studying right now.

I'll start by saying that I've never heard that symptom before. Maybe an allergy? Did you buy a new food or start a new shampoo? Wife buy a new lipstick or lotion? New razors? New shaving gel?

Sometimes it's just not TMS.

I've had almost every equivalent of TMS also, and that doesn't sound TMS'ish to me.

I'd really check closely at what changed that gets near your lips. Could be that your wife may be the cause too if you are in contact.

The last line you said is interesting though.

"I think I'll make an appointment with my doctor to have it checked out but I sure could not use a distraction from studying right now."

NOT use? But we know TMS doesn't care what you CONSCIOUSLY DO or DO NOT want to be distracted from. It distracts what IT wants to be distracted from.

Jcrissman,

Not sure if it is a tms symptom, however:
Allergies are a dynamic hyper sensitivity against a normal substance that really has no threat to your health. They are a misdirected, or a misplaced response of your immune system which is acting as if this normal harmless substance were some dangerous foreign invader. Interestingly Allergic responses are also Learned
responses. Learned responses that can be Un-Learned.

I use guided imagery when I catch them early and it works.

For what its worth, the "p" and "th" words actually test different cranial nerves ("p" --> 7; "th" --> 12). I had periods of time in the past where I focused on my speech as well and thought something may have been wrong, but I was just paranoid and as soon as I forgot about it everything was fine. Its pretty easy to start panicking about your speech, focusing on it even more, only to then stutter and slur uncontrollably. Its an annoying vicious cycle and, in my experience, it was thankfully just a psychological game. I've been there so I know how frustrating it can be. Try and forget about it completely and I bet it'll go away. If not, see your doctor or a neurologist, but I think you'll be fine. Good luck buddy.

Best,
MK
