Hello folks. I just signed up yesterday & this is my first time posting a writing, so I'm a rookie here. My name is Jay & 24 yrs old living in cypress, California. Currently I'm going to school for physical therapist and doing internship in clinic which is in los angeles. Currently, I'm having numbness and tingling on my left hand, specifically on my left pinkie and spread out to fourth and to the wrist. Also, I have GERD which is very nasty disease, so I'm taking Prolosec otc once a day. It's been 1 1/2 yrs that i'm having those symptoms and disease. By the way, I've already checked up my x-ray and did all kinds of test from doctors, went to acupuncture, and of course have seen physical therapist and chiropractors who work in the clinic. but neither one has worked out well and couldn't find out what is really wrong. every time when i eat something, i feel something is cling to my throat, some residue foods stuck in my throat. So I've lost 20 pounds already. On top of that, I'm a triathlete and have an up coming event on Oct 4th in venice beach, but i'm really afraid to do because my left hand bothers me so much that i can't even go to gym and do strengthneing workout for enhancing my training. However, I saw about Dr. sarno's theory from the some sort of 'mind documentary' which is in korean language. Right after I watched that documentary, i ordered a book of 'the mindbody prescription' from amazon.com. Currently, i'm reading it, but in frankly, I'm still skeptical about his theory (Am I normal being skeptical??). However, i'm so desperate and there is no where to go anymore, so i'm just giving a shot for it.... Actually, I was born in Korea and grew up in there quite long time, so I know little bit about mind and body is connected and cooperate each other because my grandma was Buddhism and she always told me that every sickness is coming from our mind, and i truly believe what my grandma says. So I'm trying my best to accept and believe his theory, and i really wish that theory is going to cure my ailment and sickness....please Lord help me!!!!!! Thank you all Mr, Mrs, Ms, and Miss for reading my creepy writing and please do reply on my posting any comments or thoughts if you want...or encouragement would be good too.. |

Hi 2sjade, I'm sorry to hear of your struggle with chronic symptoms. It sounds like you have been checked out thoroughly, and have been unsuccessful with treatments you have tried. That says to me, that this is most likely TMS. Your symptoms fit the profile of TMS.
There's no need to apologize for what you wrote. You are understandably upset. Who wouldn't be after over a year of symptoms, with no effective treatment offered (a cure). You have every right to be, but let me reassure you, you have found the cure in this little book. There have been others in your same situation and even worse, but they have recovered fully and regained healthy, fulfilling lives.
Your skepticism is very normal. You have been given other explanations for your symptoms in the past, so of course you would doubt a new and different one. This theory IS hard to believe. Even Dr. Sarno in one of his books, mentions that some people think of it as magical thinking (I assure you, it is not). I had a LOT of skepticism at first too, but after 10 years of back pain and many failed treatments including shoulder surgery, I had no where else to turn. After reading Dr. Sarno's books, I read many other books about the mindbody connection and found that they all supported Dr. Sarno's theory.I then read medical journal articles and studies that have disproven the current medical diagnoses that are given to those of us they can't help. There is a lot of proof out there in the form of studies, books, success stories. Speaking of success stories, read the ones on this forum and I think you will be amazed and encouraged to keep trying this approach. My success story is here: http://www.tmshelp.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5469
There are other very helpful sites that give information and help with using this treatment approach such as the tmswiki.org, and yourpain is real.com (remove spaces--Dr. Howard Schubiner's web site). There is also a wealth of great information on this forum given by intelligent and compassionate tms'ers.
Follow the advice in the book: Read and re-read it several times Repudiate the structural diagnoses Balance your life (rage/soothe ratio) Uncover your stresses/worries/anger Journal, cry, talk, scream Take care of yourself Challenge your pain/symptoms rather than giving in to it Talk to your brain Don't fight it, but listen to what your body is trying to tell you
Finally, I must say that...Your wise grandmother was exactly right.
I hope this information changes your life like it has mine.
All the best, Peg

Hi 2sjade,
Welcome to the forum.
Wow, Dr Sarno has reached the Korean language?! That's great!
Your grandmother sounds very wise.
Have a good read through the Success Stories -they are here:
http://www.tmshelp.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=4
There are a multitude of symptoms which people have recovered from, but the cause is the same.
We've started a GERD page on the wiki but it needs adding to: http://tmswiki.wetpaint.com/page/Gastroesophageal+Reflux+Disease+(GERD) If you're reading through the Success Stories and find more GERD ones, please do add them to the wiki page if you get time - it'll help others who come after you to read success stories which match their symptom. (If you need any help with editing the wiki, do contact me.)
You might also find this page useful on the wiki:

All the best,

I won't add much to the other (excellent!) responses, except to say that if TMS were not so psychologically threatening in our society, a LOT of people would be living better lives right now.
It is far easier to say "I have a bad back" (or whatever body part you care to mention) than to say "I am hurt deep inside my mind." And so, TMS thrives.
Work on loving yourself and counter-balancing the negative messages that are born of your inner rage and anxiety, and follow the other tips on this forum, and you will soon see the proof you are looking for.
Very best wishes to you!! |

Hello this is 2sjade again. Thanks crk, HilaryN, and Peg for all your concerns and care. I didn't expect that much of kindness and warmness reply from you guys. I've gotten better and felt great just reading those replies. BTW, i have a question about this TMShelp forum. I'd like to attend any sort of TMS senminar if there is any in Los angeles area. Once again, is there any TMS seminar in Los angeles? |

Jay,
1. write all of your symptoms down on paper. 2. go see Dr. David Schechter. He's about an hour north of cypress, depending on traffic. It's essential that you see a TMS doctor to be able to accept the TMS diagnosis mentally. Schechter is (generally) a good diagnostician. The fact that all your tests are coming back clean is a good sign. 3. This sounds like what I went through. 4. Triathletes definitely have a personality that would make them prone to TMS. 5. $100 says you have TMS. |

Oh, and blow off the triathlon. You're just going to make your worry worse by thinking about the looming deadline.
In fact, blow off triathlons altogether. There's no sense in spending all of that time training for something you're not getting paid for. LOL - unless you're getting paid for it. |

I've had the numbness and tingling you describe also and I know that it would just about drive you insane and has a huge effect on your life. I was positive there was something wrong with the nerve that serves those two fingers, but my EMG tests were perfect. It's very difficult to accept that there's nothing physically wrong with you which could cause such pain when you feel it so plainly, but that's really the first step.
I tried to fight my pain for ages, continuing with work in extreme pain, studying and taking exams (I even had a scribe assigned to write the answers for me, as I couldn't write) etc. but eventually I had to cancel my commitments, which meant having to let people down and inconvenience others. This is hard to do for the TMS personality but necessary. I didn't do it until I was backed into a corner but it lessened the worry alot. Less worry gives you more energy to focus on getting better.
Best of luck, hope you're on the right track soon.
PS - PRCalDude, seeing as you have opened a book, I'll throw in another 100! |
